So what shortages are you personally seeing?

My dad picked up some caffeine free diet coke, but it was in the 500ml bottles.

I have also heard about the aluminum can shortage, but I’m wondering why they aren’t putting out less common flavors (coke zero, caffeine free coke, etc) in plastic bottles instead? they have 500ml, 1.25L, 2L, etc plastic bottles they could use instead.

We got lucky. In the early days, we saw BJs Warehouse having two one-pound packages of yeast. We sent one to our daughter and kept the other.

I’ve been able to get it in 8-oz “desk” sized or 4-oz drawer/purse size. Meanwhile disinfectant spray or wipes and rubbing alcohol are the ones I have not seen signs of coming back in my current location, at least within the local everyday range of action (I mean, I’m not going to drive 2 hours each way to look for some unless I know for a fact it will be there for me). Bleach is back in stock. General-use household-surface cleaners have been slowly reappearing – but as mentioned earlier, the daily shower-buildup spray? Nada.

Foodwise, rice in less-than-5-pound bags has been quick to go and the brand variety is spotty. The canned beans shelf has some voids but is adequately stocked if you don’t mind that, again, the brand/kind you prefer is not necessarily going to be there.

Wasp / hornet spray shoots further.

wasp/hornet spray on human mucus membranes = eyes / nose / mouth might actually be harmful enough to get you charged with assault.

In a self-defensy enough situation that’s an acceptable risk. But a risk one should take knowingly.

Same here in Brooklyn.

That’s a weird one. I wonder if the same production lines have been repurposed for something else with higher demand?

I don’t know enough about what’s in that stuff, or how it’s made, to have any idea why there’s a (widespread, apparently) shortage.

Here’s a homemade version of shower spray. Somewhat explains why it is hard to find.
Homemade Daily Shower Spray

  • 1/2 cup Hydrogen Peroxide .
  • 1/2 cup Rubbing Alcohol.
  • 1 teaspoon Liquid Dish Soap.
  • 1 tablespoon Dishwasher Rinse Aid.
  • 3 cups Water.

Homemade Daily Shower Cleaner Spray - The Make Your Own Zone

Rubbing alcohol is very hard to find-almost all of it is going to hand sanitizer gel. At this point I would have to agree, more important that all of us can disinfect our hands than prettify our shower walls. Medical use must trump household use.

To a lesser extent the same is true of hydrogen peroxide. It can also be used as a disinfectant.

I sure understand wanting the use of shower spray to keep the shower looking nice and cutting out that back-breaking soap scum scrubbing! Might it be your worth trying putting together the recipe in a spray bottle with the ingredients you can find and using it as a stop gap? A much better than nothing?

It’s not that big a deal. Just a bit more effort involved in cleaning the bathroom.

But I’ll be glad when it’s back on the shelves.

Bacon has been in short supply here too. The lunch meat section of the store was pretty well stocked except for bacon.

Tortillas have been hit or miss, either the shelf is empty of even the gluten-free varieties or there are so many packages that they’re spilling over into an end cap display.

Finally found some yeast last week. The store had pizza crust yeast the whole time but it specifically said not to use in a bread machine so I passed.

I haven’t been affected the aluminum can thing (yet), personally, but I understand it’s caused by the beer industry moving from packaging a lot of their product into kegs (for bars) towards packaging it for retail. Perhaps soda companies are doing something similar (more retail, less selling syrup to restaurants.) That makes sense. But does this show any sign of abating? Has there been spare capacity in the aluminum can manufacturing market that can be turned online? Beer/soda companies switching to glass/plastic bottles?

A friend is a baker and she has been using brewer’s yeast. The bread has a different, chewier texture which I think is pretty good. She says she hasn’t had any problems finding it at brewing supply places. I haven’t tried it, so don’t know if it changes cooking times or anything else.

We have a misting system on the back porch and the pump finally gave up the ghost. Pump parts aren’t easy to come by, especially for older pumps so we chose to purchase a new one and have been told that it will be about 6 weeks before our new pump is ready.

Interesting! I’ve always assumed it wouldn’t allow the dough to rise sufficiently. I wonder if hers rises.

The loaf I was given seemed fairly well risen. It wasn’t light and fluffy like some breads she’s given me, but I didn’t really discuss the process with her because I was too busy thanking her and then praising the bread. When next we talk, I will ask more questions. Hobbyists always love to discuss their passion!

Be sure to report back!

I walked into a large supermarket today in Center Harbor, N.H. The cleaning supplies aisle was barren. No Lysol spray. Nothing similar. The infection numbers here are so close to zero that it’s almost negligible.

And yet. Also, the toilet paper area was heavily picked over. I blame out of state visitors who live in large cities with big infection rates. ( I’m looking at you, Boston!!).

Quite annoying. I needed that Lysol.

Most of those things have been pretty easy to find in the Boston area for weeks. Lysol spray not as much but I have seen other no-name brands.

That’s a ways from here, but I haven’t seen Lysol etc. in person since February. Dollar Tree sometimes has Clorox wipes again, though.

Has anyone else not seen much fresh corn? I have seen it a couple of times, but it’s never on sale this summer and when I’ve seen it it’s only been 8-10 picked over ears. However, now that I give it more thought, it might have more to do with NH being in a moderate drought condition across most of the state right now than Covid.

I’ve achieved Lysol spray a few times (one store near my workplace was managing to have some in stock, so I went squirrel and made repeated visits until I had enough on hand to satisfy me (limiting myself on quantity per purchase to make sure others had a fair chance). Haven’t latched onto wipes (which I only really use at work anyway) in at least a couple of months. At least hand sanitizer’s doing well, and masks are easy to come by.

There is a fresh produce stand very close to Guilford. They have fresh-cut corn everyday. If you get in the morning and cook it for lunch it’s only been off the plant for a couple of hours.

I was taken aback the first time I saw an in-store sign about a coin shortage and I still don’t really understand it. The execs at Clorox must be weeping over the quantities of disinfecting wipes they are unable to produce and sell.
