Baking soda and corned beef hash are still missing.
But rubbing alcohol and hydrogen peroxide are back!
– there’s more flour and facial tissue than there was, but still a lot of gaps. A batch of gaps elsewhere, also; I didn’t mostly try to figure out what’s supposed to be in them.
I think a lot of these things are spotty – available in some areas but not others; sometimes even available in some stores in a general area but not others.
Craft beers that I like. Every time I find one that I like, its gone the next week. Founders Solid Gold, Victory Classic, Founders Pilsner, Southern Tier variety pack and one or two others I don’t recall. Its summer time and I want a good lager! Back to the Warsteiner and (gasp!) Rolling Rock.
I go to Dollar Tree every other week or so to stock up on shipping supplies and get a few snacks. As my reward for dealing with people I always buy myself a tall boy can of Surge soda. My last 4 trips they gave been missing. Last week the entire cooler was empty.
Huh - we’ve seen shortages of some soft drinks also. Twice now I’ve tried to order 2-liter Diet Sprite (from Wegmans and Giant) and had no luck; other weeks it’s no problem.
Can’t recall if I mentioned it before, but freezers are nowhere to be found. Early on, I decided it might be a nice idea to get an extra chest freezer to keep in the garage. Nobody had them in stock. Sears let me backorder one: this was in early April and it was supposed to arrive by early July. It hasn’t arrived.
As our other freezer (an upright in the basement) seemed to be misbehaving, it became more urgent - so about 4 weeks ago I started calling around. I found one store, a Lowes, about 20 miles away that claimed to have one in stock. A titch larger than the one we wanted, as we only have limited space available, but it would have fit. I drove down there - and the fellow in the store said “no clue, we don’t have one” - HOWEVER they had just gotten in a shipment of three or four 5-cubic-foot freezers that morning. I thought about it, went down the street to Home Depot, saw they had one slightly larger one (7 cu ft) on the floor - but someone else was literally in the process of purchasing it. The staffer there said “look online every morning about 7 AM. Whatever they’ve listed then, it’ll be gone by 10 AM”.
So, back to Lowes, where miraculously they still had the tiny ones in stock. I bought one on the spot and had them load it into the back of my CRV and drove it home.
I actually called a nearby independent appliance store and the person there said that there is a nationwide shortage of them. We called a Habitat ReStore and the person there said they had nothing; they told us they’d had someone plan to bring one in, but another customer caught the donor in the parking lot and bought it off the donor!!
Apparently it’s a combination of COVID-boosted demand, COVID-impaired supply chain, and a switchover to a different refrigerant.
Ooh: paper towels!! Our Wegmans shopper texted me a photo of a completely empty shelf yesterday. I’m glad we have largely switched over to non-disposables.
At Kroger today, no low end pepperoni only frozen pizzas, isopropyl alcohol (Walgreens has had it off and on), Lysol (concentrate or aerosol ) cleaners.
At Target recently, no empty pump spray bottles, small or large. No isopropyl alcohol or Lysol.
At Best Buy recently, very slim pickings for Bluetooth speakers. Just very low and very high end. I have a gift certificate and wanted to get another JBL Flip 4 like the one I have and they haven’t had those for quite a while now.
My local grocery store ran out of cream. I had to make a tomato cream sauce with half and half instead. It was close enough to keep my family happy, but it was a little off to me.
Are you able to get them now? Those are two things people definitely cannot go without, and generics just don’t work the same way.
From this vantage point, 3 weeks later, we’re seeing some clusters in Iowa, although not in the city where I live, and nonetheless, I never saw the grocery store I stopped at that busy! However, nobody seemed to be stocking up on any one item in particular (and there was still plenty of TP) so IDK what was going on.
It’s really strange about the stuff that will sometimes be missing. The previous two times I’ve been at one particular supermarket, they were out of the pint size (473 ml or whatever) of half-and-half cream that I always buy for my coffee, but had lots of the little tiny ones as well as the quart size. Finally last Friday they were back. I hate those tiny ones because you have to peel open the stupid carton to make a spout which can be a nuisance if it’s been over-glued. The bigger ones all have plastic screw-caps.
In general, I’ve not noticed much in the way of shortages any more, not even PPE for the most part. But fortunately I’ve not been in the market for major appliances. I can well understand the freezer shortage.
I got a note from the grocery co-op I have been ordering my groceries from this morning, telling me they are not only out of the white wine vinegar I’d put on my order for today, they didn’t have any white vinegar at all.
First crop of corn come off the field and farmers got some jingle in their pocket? Sissy needs a new gingham dress for the new school year? Or is the old farmer’s almanac calling for an early snow.
A friend of mines wife is a teacher and she reports a shortage of equipment for teaching online especially Document Cameras. The top of the line models are sold out and you cant get them until maybe October.
