So...what would you do?

One suggestion is to document everything and take it to your temp service. They are the ones to whom you are responsible, and the ones who employ you. The sooner you do this, the better. Find out if they can reassign you immediately.

I do find the NP’s accusation of a drug problem interesting in light of the fact that she didn’t ask you to do a drug screen. That is a serious allegation, and it needs to be backed up.

I don’t understand why your temp agency wouldn’t simply yank you from that position when you explain the situation to them. I’ve never worked for a nursing temp agency, but I have done hiring and worked with clients for a regular administrative temp agency, and if something like that had ever happened, our first move would have been to get our employee out of a toxic environment (which you are definitely in).

Here’s my biggest concern (and having just watched a nurse friend go through a situation that was completely beyond her control, I’d hate to see anyone else get in something like that): She basically lost her job because she got injured on the job at the hospital - they blamed her for getting injured, although she tried desperately to get back to work. They withheld her worker’s comp, and eventually just let her go under the pretense of her doing a bad job (and this girl ADORES her job - she is a GOOD nurse - that was NOT a possibility). She went to one agency who wouldn’t take her on because of the situation - they were afraid of liability. So, she went to another agency and just didn’t tell them. She’s worked for them for several months now, she’s done a great job, they’re happy with her - but she’s afraid that they’ll find out about her old job and she’ll lose this job, too. She has everything documented, things from her doctor, it’s even documented in her file at the hospital she was fired from that she was INJURED ON THE JOB. Yet she still can be held accountable for it. That would be my only fear with you leaving the job and going to a new one - that an agency would be fearful to take you on until this issue was resolved. I think a lawyer is definitely the best way to go - I don’t think this is a frivolous lawsuit - this is defamation of character and you don’t deserve that. Please, take whatever steps necessary to preserve your career.

The HIPAA thing is very important. I think perhaps you should talk to someone about your grave concern about their possible lack of HIPAA compliance. www.hipaacomply.com

Trust me. They do not want to screw with HIPAA. It could shut them down.

Document. Double document. Go to N for advice. Go to Doctor for advice.

Go to the owner.

Quit.

Sue.

Laugh.

NO!!!

When you work for a temporary agency and receive your paychecks from them, they are the ones that need to be made aware of this. Not the company directly, not any employee of the company, past or present.

First off, you don’t want to tip your hand to the company. Your documentation becomes worthless in a hurry and you’ll look like an ass.

Second, temporary services tend to have a LOT of clout. It’s their job to mediate between employee and client company, and if nothing else, they can take you out of there and put you somewhere better, or at least less dysfunctional.

Third, it’s probably somewhere in your employment agreement with the temp service that you are to go to them first with any problems. If you don’t, you could be out of a job entirely.

Although the situation on FL may be lots different, there is a STARK shortage of nurses in Minnesota, and I’ve heard that this is a problem all over the country. Seems to me you’re in one of the few professional fields in this economy that would allow you to find another job – if not easily – fairly painlessly. Definitely dust off the resume and see what you can find on your own. You sound like a great asset to any office.

Well…I survived the day but it just gets better and better…

Still no key, I was told just to wait in the parking lot until someone shows up to let me in. Told the office manager that I wouldn’t be doing that as it’s getting warm in the mornings and just to count on seeing me when I get there. That would be because the office manager claims that she had no key prior to N turning her key because the office manager had given her copy to the aesthetician that comes to our office one day per week.

Another job called today and wants me to interview this week. Hopefully I can get in there this Friday…
