I have recently gotten in to Betta Fish breeding. I have been breeding guppies for a while, which is honestly completely different from breeding egg laying fish like bettas, but I wanted to try my hand at breeding bettas. I have attempted 5 spawns without success, but this last time, Presto!! I have a ton of baby bettas to take care of. I am documenting it here
I am hoping to raise many of them into adulthood and will be giving away or selling them. I have gotten more than a little obsessed with bettas and their genetics, fin and color variations, behavior, care, and other betta related information. I was wondering if there were any other betta fish enthusiasts on the Dope.
Also, if you have pictures of your bettas, betta set ups, and stories about your bettas I would love to see and read about them!
We won a betta fish in a tiny bowl at the Boardwalk in Seaside Heights, NJ many years ago. The fish only need a surprisingly tiny container of water (One teller at a bank I went to kept his in the bottom of a transparent vase of flowers). They’re also very hard to kill. hile we were away, the container the Betta was in got knocked over. I don’t know how long it was before the kid who was watching the house and feeding the cats* found it. He put it back in a container of water, and in a short time it was swimming around again.
*Yes, it’s possible one of the cats knocked it over, although they never had before. Please note that the cats did not eat the fish.
I bought a couple Betta fish. There used to be a internet seller that had dozens of breeds. It seems to be gone now.
They lasted a couple years. Easy to care for and didn’t stink like goldfish. I’ll never buy a Goldfish again. I’ve thought about getting more Betta fish. They are very pretty.
I used to have a betta on my desk in a tiny aquarium. I really love them.
I had a blue boy named Gainsborough. A red and cream one named Pad Thai. Hmm. I can’t remember any other names.
My first husband was way into aquariums and he would take care of any fish I decided I wanted. It was a fun way to have fish, when someone else did all of the hard stuff and you just get to admire them!
I’ve had the cheap pet store ones off & on over the years.
I know a lot of breeders & keepers that don’t like the lily/bowl combo & prefer tanks, but mine did very well in that set up - with pellets & blood worms. I’ve had 1 die prematurely of dropsy, but that’s pretty much it. Another one only lived a year or so, but he seemed older than the others when I got him.
Since my hubby & I are saving up for some land to plop a house & permie “farm”, the next betta project is on the back burner.
I figure I’ll get a nice little set up to breed a pair or just buy a nice, fancy betta. (I also love the half-moons.)
I found the web site that I used ten years ago. bettatalk.com Glad she’s still operating. She has a lot of information about caring for betta fish. What to do when they get sick.
I had betas years ago. One was in the 40 gal tank with other kinds of fish. None were red, so, everybody got along.
My husband (at the time) would tease him by putting a mirror on the side of the tank. It did bring out his colors, but he kept running into the glass.
I’d love to see pictures of yours.
We have a dark blue half-moon right now. For some reason my daughter, who is his technical owner, has not come up with a name for him after more than a year; so I call him Mr. Fish and just say that we don’t know his first name.
Bettas have a lot of personality. There’s always someone who’s glad to see you in the morning, although you probably don’t want to hear what he is really saying while he’s doing the Betta dance.
I had no idea the males do all the caring for the young. I learned a new thing today!
For a while, I had two in side-by-side vases: a brilliant blue male and a bright red one. Being the creative sort, and a fan of Dr. Seuss, I called them Red Fish and Blue Fish.
I still have Blue Fish (long story) but it just doesn’t have the same zing without the whole "1 fish, 2 fish … " routine.
I am breeding a iridescent female half moon with a red marble male half moon. I have lost count of how many fry I have, but over 50 so far. I am most excited to see what colors they exhibit. Both parents are particularly aggressive, so I may have to separate the males sooner than usual.
LOL. I got a beautiful peachy orange corn tail betta for my infant daughter’s daycare, set up the tank and everything. They still haven’t come up with a name, so they call him Fishy.
