This is true. Stark in the comics is a dry drunk in every sense of that term. There was a point right after he hit bottom, got sober and started rising up again where he was kind of fun, when he had the little startup after Stane took Stark Industries away from him.
That explains A LOT about why I like both characters so much (and the actors, by extension)! Both of them have lovely voices as well. :o
