DC won the last round of mutually execrable anti-heroines with Catwoman (2004 / 9% RT) beating out Elektra (2005 / 10% RT) by a year. But given the results, I’m sure everyone, from audiences to producers would rather forget either ever happened. Moreover, I’m sure that these two abysmal outings are at least part of the reason producers are dragging their feet on putting super-heroine headliners in development.
At this point, the smart money suggests it will be Wonder Woman vs Black Widow in a race to see some girl-(super)power up on the screen.
The untitled Superman-Batman, which will feature Wonder Woman has been pushed back to 2016. Though Godot is signed for 3 films, it’s unlikely a Wonder Woman will make it to screens until at least a year later than that, even later if WB tries to push a Justice League film out in front of it.
I don’t think we’ll see a movie headlining just Black Widow: I’m expecting a flashback to her adventures with Hawkeye. “Just like Budapest!” “Clearly, you and I have very different memories of Budapest.” Would putting her in one of two lead positions count?
If Winter Soldier does really well (since it is apparently a bit different from the other MCU movies so far being more intrigue and spy thriller along with the action) they might want to try to strike gold twice by going a similar direction with a Black Widow movie.
I think it will be Marvel, but will be a Carol Danvers (Ms. Marvel/Captain Marvel) film, based on events coming out of Guardians of the Galaxy that will also tie into the third Avengers cycle.
ETA: I made this guess before clicking on the second link in the OP, which speculates similarly.
Unfortunately, Carol Danvers is too obscure a character to make a successful film. You’d have to introduce the entire Kree/Captain Marvel storyline in to make it “work.” Also, Marvel already ignored her tie-in with Rogue, meaning that even they don’t see “much” there.
Another Supergirl or a Wonder Woman feature are probably better “bets”
This. If the next Superman movie does well, they’ll start ramping up Supergirl, I’ll bet. Wonder Woman is iffy - the character has great potential, but few writers seem able to capitalize on it. Whedon and Raimi would be good, but both seem married to Marvel projects. Whoever wrote the Justice League cartoons (Dwayne McDuffie mostly) would be good - I loved all of the female characters on those series and WW was a great mix of warrior, princess, and woman (usually teasing Batman).
The obscureness works in her favor, at least in terms of revamping her origin. Look at Hawkeye - no one complained about the movie apparently ditching his background as a former circus performer-turned-super-villain.
The X-Men movies are from Fox, not Marvel Studios. Fox didn’t have much interest in the character, but Marvel might feel differently.
Superheroine films never make a nickel, and really shouldn’t be tried again, until a new, successful, heroine TV series can pave the way.
Oddly, the people with the best shot at this is Disney, if they made a Kim Possible film, or a solo effort for Mrs Incredible (even if it was a short feature).
I went with DC because I think Wonder Woman is the only one that would conceivably do well.
Marvel girls (also Marvel Girl) would be too obscure for anyone but comic book nerds to go see, which would kill the movie before it even gets off the ground.
Say what you will about superhero movies, they still need to appeal to the non-comic crowd, and other than the upcoming Guardians movie, every other movie has been with people that my mom knows
Marvel isn’t afraid of Obscure. 99% of the world hasn’t heard of the Guardians of the Galaxy AND YET here we are waiting for Andy from Parks and Rec to fly around with a talking raccoon and a talking tree.
A Captain Marvel movie is a distinct possibility.
I’d agree that Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers) could be translated to a movie fairly easily. Guardians of the Galaxy and the Chitari are in place so further developing the galactic angle of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and introduce the Kree seems like a doable next step. For the purposes of the movie, I’d think they’d have to shorthand her origin a bit. Would they even include Mar-Vell? Who’d inspire her to become Captain Marvel if not him? Would a heroic sacrifice on his part be the catalyst to make her a super hero?
In regard to her powers, they seem easy enough to put on the screen – flying brick, super strength, and some energy manipulation. Her current uniform seems like it would translate fairly easily as well.
I believe she’s popular enough with comic fans – she’s had a resurgence in the past few years right? I don’t think she’s as well known to the non-comic audience but I also don’t think you have to try too hard for her to be identifiable either.
She Hulk might be better known, generally, but I think she may tie a little too closely to Hulk for it to work. Spider-Woman may also be better known, but I figure Marvel may not have the rights to her and/or it would be too close to the Spider-Man franchise. I can’t think of too many more non-mutant female heroes in Marvel who could stand on their own in a movie.
