Spider-Man vs. Wonder Woman: Which should I see?

Simple question: I have some free time this summer, and I like superhero movies (I’ve seen and enjoyed most of the Marvel universe movies, but haven’t bothered with DC’s recent offerings). Spider-Man and Wonder Woman both seem like they’re pretty good. If I only go to see one, which should it be? No spoilers, of course.

Can we go see Spider-Man vs. Wonder Woman?

Not without a lot of wrangling between Disney and Warner Bros’ lawyers, we can’t.

Spidey hands down.

Spidey is a fun summer movie that mixes action and comedy and also really tells a good Spider Man story. Wonder Woman is a decent-enough movie that completely falls apart in the third act and becomes a run-of-the-mill, if not unspectacular superhero flick.

I don’t quite understand what prevents you from seeing both. I can’t really tell you which to see because I don’t know what sort of movie you prefer. I really liked both of them, but I’m a Marvel fan, so I’d go with Spider-Man: Homecoming personally. But as I said, I really enjoyed Wonder Woman as well.

I thought Spider-Man was just OK, but really enjoyed Wonder Woman.

I may just be getting tired of the Marvel/MCU formula.

As an aside, Spidey and WW did mix it up in the second Spiderman/Superman comic.

I know you said only one, but you should see both.

If you’re strict about just the one, then go see Wonder Woman.

Saw both with my kids. I’d say Spiderman but that’s because I don’t really like comic book movies that take themselves seriously. Spiderman had more humor so that’s my pick. I really wanted Wonder Woman to be better than it was, I had really high hopes for it, but in general I thought it was a missed opportunity and just not that original or interesting.

If you like the MCU movies, especially the more humorous ones like GotG, you will almost certainly enjoy Spider-man: Homecoming. So I voted for Spidey.

Spider-man is nothing but yet another MCU movie. Wonder Woman actually does things that neither Marvel nor DC has done before.

You’ve already seen a better Spider-man movie. You’ve not seen a movie quite like WW.

Out of curiosity, BigT, which Spider-man movie that you’re assuming I saw was better? I haven’t watched those for a while, either.

Totally go see Lemon Meringue. Guaranteed not to disappoint.

Agreed, though I’d say it’s on a par with the first Tobey Maguire Spiderman.

The first half an hour of Homecoming was pretty dull. Having him film himself badly went on far too long. It improved from there on but never became a brilliant movie IMO. Worth watching, yeah, but not instead of WW.

It probably makes a big difference if you’ve seen all the Avengers movies so far. I got the impression I was missing out on a lot because I’ve only seen some of them - like the beginning scene after the alien crash landing, is that from another film? And there were numerous lines that seemed like they were intended as jokes but didn’t work for me because I haven’t seen the other movies.

WW is a more sumpt movie to look at (not just Gal Gadot) and has a storyline that is unlike any of the other comic book movies. The WWI setting lends it gravitas but there’s a lot of humour too. Seeing the other DC movies would, again, help, esp Batman vs Superman, which I haven’t seen but was referenced within the film, but because most of it was set decades before most of the DC characters were born there weren’t many tie-ins.

Spider-Man

Wonder Woman: Character is an A. Gal Gadot is an A+. Chris Pine is an A-. Movie is a B. Good, solid fun. Guaranteed to please. Not even the least bit original. Take one part Thor, one part Captain America: First Avenger, multiply by XX chromosomes. Voila, Wonder Woman. Gains points for WWI. Loses points for some fairly offputting unforced continuity errors.

Spider-Man: Character is a B+. Holland is an A. Keaton is an A- but has moments of A+. Other actors are B (sick of Stark, sick of Downey). Not original (every Spider-Man story is the same, really) but good use of various resources, good use of the MCU - and, most of all, just a joy surrounding Peter Parker, his friend Ned, Aunt May and a few others.

Spider-Man is more fun.

Wonder Woman made me care about the character much more than any Marvel film. It’s not even close.

They are both very good. I would pick WW only because it will be out of theaters soon.

What exactly do you think WW did that is different? If anything my feeling coming out of Wonder Woman was “ah good, DC finally managed to make a Marvel movie.” As bbonden said to me it felt a lot like Thor (demigod from another land has to fit into society) and Captain America (war setting, teams up with a squad of normies).

I agree with this. Don’t miss Wonder Woman in favor of Spider Man.

I have only seen Wonder Woman and I would still recommend Spider-man.

WW was good, but nothing too amazing. I’ve heard great things about Spider-man.
