Spider-Man vs. Wonder Woman: Which should I see?

On some further pondering, I think WW benefited from being a standalone film (other than the framing bookends). Since WW is set so far in the past, there is nothing available to tie into.

As SciFiSam noted, a lot of what is fun about Spider-Man is the call backs to various other MCU films.

I was sort of thinking this, too. I probably will see Wonder Woman first, because that way, if I decide later in the summer to see another movie, I’ll still have a chance.

Like Chronos, I enjoy a good superhero movie but am not a real “fan”…have only seen a small percentage of what’s been done since the resurgence began with 1989’s BATMAN (or would you say 1978’s SUPERMAN?).

I’ve seen neither WW or SM, but I would lean toward SM. I’m not overexposed to the Marvel formula.

Never been crazy about Wonder Woman, although Canadian genius artist Kate Beaton pulled off a couple of good takes on 'er.

I’ll say this. Wonder Woman represents a landmark, both for being a superhero film featuring a woman as the lead and for being the first D.C. success in a while, with a tone significantly different from the Marvel formula. Spider Man will be just another successful MCU formula installment. It’s worth being part of the superhero film cultural event of 2017 of Wonder Woman. You can watch Spider Man on streaming or whatever some other time. It’s what the seventh recent Spider Man movie?

When thinking about all the movies coming out this summer I decided I wanted to see Wonder Woman over Spider-Man: Homecoming. I probably will see Spider-Man, but made it a point to see Wonder Woman (and did a week or so ago).

My reasoning was Wonder Woman was original (there have been now 6 Spider-Man movies in the past 15 years??) and there was good early buzz about it. I wanted to throw my support behind it as I WANT DC to succeed like Marvel. DC’s paltry efforts so far at a shared universe have made me sad :frowning:

I consider the definitive Spider-man movie to still be Spider-man 2. I’ve not seen anyone who disagrees. Most also seem to think Spider-man was better than Homecoming. After that, it varies. Some think Amazing Spider-man is also better. Most think that Amazing Spider-man 2 and Spider-man 3 were worse. That makes Homecoming about middle of the pack.

It portrays the quintessential DC superhero, something we’ve not seen since Superman 2. It just a genuinely good person with powers fighting evil, and does a great job with that. It’s not a movie about overcoming personal flaws to do good–the Marvel superhero model. (Sure, Cap is probably the closest, but he’s still clearly flawed.)

It also handles the sexism aspect the right way, something Marvel hasn’t even approached. It’s the rare Hollywood movie that is supposed to be empowering to women that is empowering to women.

And it doesn’t try to set up 500 different movies. It doesn’t set up any, as far as I can tell. It just does a minimal link to the previous movie that has the same actor playing the same character by setting it up as a flashback.

Yeah, I’m surprised you haven’t seen anyone who disagreed with that. Most critics consider Homecoming to be at least the second best Spider-Man movie behind 2, while quite a few consider it the best. I personally think it’s better made and has a much more believable villain than 2 and I think Tom Holland is a much better Peter Parker. It’s worlds better than either of the Mark Webb/Andrew Garfield Spider-Man movies.

It wasn’t until the hype train started for Homecoming that I can recall any hearing or reading any kind of praise for Spider-man 2, and I don’t remember thinking that much of it the last time I saw it… Did I watch that movie wrong?

See WW.

It’s a well balanced film with a well written story. It shows some back story of the Amazons. Then of Diana herself. And then Diana encountering our world and there’s some humor there in the juxtaposition. And then it turns into a Superhero movie.

My mom who doesn’t like comics wanted to see it and loved it and had no problem following along with the story.

I only saw it, I usually wait for the DVDs, because she wanted me to go to explain the comic book stuff to her. There was no explanations needed. It is a well written story.

Spider-Man 2, in my experience, has always been considered one of the greatest comic movies of all time. That level of praise didn’t start recently, but ever since its release. It’s generally highly-regarded among people who regard those things.

Spider-Man 2 was the one with Doc Oc, right? I did see that one, and the one before it. Both were quite good, and recognized as such at the time, though I’m not sure that there was a clear consensus that 2 was better than 1.

And while they don’t give Marisa Tomei a lot to do, she memorably nails it.

If you prefer a light, fun movie that finally gets Spidey right, see Spider-Man.

If you prefer an inspiring, more serious but still far more lighthearted than the average DC fare movie that finally gets a female lead heroine right, see Wonder Woman.

They’re both excellent, but they definitely have a different focus.

Huh. It must be like with Ghostbusters, when I didn’t realize until the remake came out that the original being beloved was actually a thing. Like I said, I guess I’m watching movies wrong.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is clearly the better film.

I have not seen any of the Snyder DC movies due to bad buzz. Despite the good response to Wonder Woman I still chose not to see it in the cinema because as far as I could tell those irritating Snydery things like slow motion and a muddy colour grade still applied, though it was hard to know if there was a lot or a little of those things as most reviews never mentioned them or maybe they had gotten used to it.

So all I can recommend is the new Spider-Man, which I really enjoyed, even though there was very little in it we haven’t seen variations on before.

And I disagree. Whatdya know? Although both are very good.

I just got back from seeing Wonder Woman. It was not without flaws, but it was a lot deeper than most movies, and there were a lot of things it did right.

Now off to the spoiler thread!

Woo-hoo!

Hopefully you will have time to go see the better one now.
