Military occupation of land that doesn’t belong to you is not only legal, its conduct is explicitly described and proscribed in the 4th Geneva Convention.
If it is proscribed, that would make it illegal (for signatories).
This is a good example of my point. For example, the US militarily occupied Japan after World War II and the occupation continues to this day. Do people like Dick Dastardly assert that this is “illegal”?
Of course not.
Are people like Dick Dastardly able to point to a general principle of law against “occupation”? Of course not.
Heck, they are unable to set forth a principled approach for determining what land “belongs to” a state, entity or group of people.
