So You Don't Think Grocery Workers Deserve Protection....

Broomstick, I hope you’re feeling better soon. Please check in regularly! My thanks to you, Biotop, Biotop’s wife, needscoffee’s daughter and anyone/everyone else doing a thankless job right now! May you all stay safe.

Apology accepted, thank you.

I pre-emptively called off work last night so no one had to get a 3 am “can you come in?” phone call. Don’t feel any worse but don’t feel any better, either.

Not feeling better than “shitting yourself into a smaller pant size” is a justifiable reason to call off work.

Skip the TP and use wet wipes. (Trash bin; don’t flush.) If you’re out, a half sheet of paper towel - or a Taco Bell napkin, or whatever - swiped under a cold faucet trickle works okay, too.

But you probably know all that. Hope you & your ass feel better soon.

So far I haven’t had to make any mad dashes to the toilet this morning, but day is not over yet. Maybe I successfully dumped the entire warp core yesterday.

Still pushing fluids. Not peeing more than usual, though, which makes me suspect the colon is saving up for another artillery volley. Also, the bowel is grumbling. Loudly.

May be eating a lot of roasted potatoes and chicken soup today. My usual diet is full of fiber and roughage which is normally very good but not when you’re having intestinal issues.

Veteran supermarket employee here. I cashiered in another lifetime. During this pandemic I, along with several of my coworkers, have been pulled from our departments to bag and to man the front door since most of our front end people have either quit or are out on medical leave.

We’ve had AFAIK 2 or 3 confirmed cases and maybe as many as 10 “presumptive” which meant that those who were in contact also had to quarantine themselves. Needless to say this has made us very short handed.

it helps that my state is very strict on protocols since we’re one of the hot spots. People may bitch about waiting in line but they comply with masks and the 6-foot rule for the most part.

Most of our front end people have been working straight without days off because if they had a day off, there’s nobody to fill in because everybody is in the same boat.

The person with whom I live doesn’t want to hear my bitching when I come home, so I’m very much like Broomstick in that regard.

How are you feeling this morning otherwise?

:concerned look:

I’m feeling tired.

When I’m sitting still I’m OK but as soon as I get up and start doing something my energy runs down quickly. That’s the most of it right now. So I don’t think I’m actually well, but not very symptomatic, either. Is it recovery from a stomach bug, or covid? Who knows?

Diarrhea causes loss of potassium, which can make you feel weak. Have a banana!!

Whatever it is I think you should definitely not be going in to work. And not tomorrow, either, even if you’re starting to feel a bit better by then (which I very much hope for.)

What’s your employer’s policy? Will you need a doctor’s statement?

Get extra sleep, if you can.

Or the whole classic ‘tummy probs’ BRAT diet: Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast.

Have none.

I did have a couple of roasted potatoes, though, which also have potassium - something most people are unaware of. In fact, if I recall correctly, potatoes have about twice the potassium of bananas.

I’m not entirely sure of the current policy or how easy it will be to obtain a doctor’s statement. The daily health check does inquire if you’ve had a number of symptoms, including diarrhea, in the prior 24 hours so that’s important…

I will shortly attempted to contact one of my managers this afternoon for more guidance.

Alas, sleep is not something I seem able to do as easily as I used to. I am taking it very easy, doing some reading, spending time talking to my birds who seem very concerned about me. Although it might be just calling dibs on my eyeballs… No, actually, the conure has been stuck to me like glue, grooming my hair, making concerned noises…

Unfortunately, no bananas in the household (ate the last of them yesterday), the rice is brown, which can be irritating to upset tummy due to fiber content, and no applesauce. The toast, however, is excellent as the bread is homemade.

So it’s potatoes, toast, chicken soup, and lemon Jello at the Broomstick household today. Maybe some couscous later.

With strict limitations on how many people can enter the store at a time, I’d be just as pissed off about his bringing the whole family along. Fuck those people! They are the reason people have to queue up outside and wait hours at a time to get in the store.

This particular Wal-Mart wasn’t limiting, although it did have directional arrows on the floor. Not that many people were paying attention to that, either.

Poor Broomstick, you have all my sympathy and then some. Please keep us posted on how you are doing.

(And if I was out of line earlier, I apologize.)

You know what would be useful? If people like you could get dibs on groceries. I don’t know whether your workplace offers curbside pickup, but if I can spend $5 for someone else to pull my shopping list so my asthmatic self doesn’t have to go into a grocery store, wouldn’t it would be awesome if management could designate someone to pull employees’ grocery orders so they don’t have to stand in line for hours? Then there might actually be stuff left that you could eat when you go home.

I do have some access to groceries before the store officially opens, which helps, but a lot has to do when the stuff actually arrives. For the high-demand items they’re put on the floor whenever the truck happens to arrive. So if the truck gets in two hours into my shift they put the stuff on the shelves and it can be gone by the time I get off and can go shopping.

Which is one reason I get so pissed off at the whiners going “but I NEED more than two of these!”. If we didn’t put limits on certain items people WOULD hoard them and even fewer people would have a chance at those items. Of course, each individual is considering their own needs and wants, not the larger needs of the community as a whole, but that’s the tragedy of the commons for you.

Here in Maine, there are currently state-wide occupancy limits on all businesses, according to the square footage of the buildings. For example, our local Dollar General is only allowed five customers in the store at a time. So when some dipshit decides to bring the entire household along, other people cannot access the store at all until they all leave.
