So you want to attend the World Series...

Last night, after the game that will live in infamy, Fenway announced the sale of tickets for their share of the World Series games. The prices seemed “reasonable”, at least in the context of such a major event - all less than $200. But if these tickets have yet to go on sale, how are other online ticket agencies offering the same tickets for upwards of $1200? Does anyone know if ticket agencies are given a supply of tickets by MLB, or do these ticket agents have bunches of people frantically trying to buy up tickets when they go on sale at 3pm today - just like the rest of us?

Lots of ways:

  1. They buy tickets from season ticket holders who can’t attend.
  2. They buy tickets from season ticket holders who need the extra cash. The ticket holders buy them at $200, the brokers buy them back at $700.
  3. The ticket brokers hold season tickets just for this eventuality.
  4. Tickets are made available to various baseball VIPs as a courtesy. If they don’t plan to attend, they sell them to the brokers.
  5. The ticket brokers aren’t quite on the up and up.
  6. The brokers send people to buy tickets for them.
