I was friends last night and the topic turned to Soap Operas. I occasionally (all right more than occasionally) watch “The Young & the Restless.” I commented on just how many characters on that show have been kidnapped and held prisoner by a villain/psycho. They could start a support group, though whenever it happens none of the other characters ever recall their particular experience. Anyway, in my recollection, the following characters have been kidnapped and held prisoner:
Victor: By a nutty survivalist
Brad: By a nutty ex
Nicki: By a nutty boyfriend
Victoria: By a nutty boyfriend
Lauren: By a nutty secret admirerer
Kay: By a nutty evil twin
Little Nate: By his father
Lauren: By a nutty nurse
Nina: by evil baby snatchers
Paul: By the Mob, if I remember correctly
Who am I forgetting? Seems like someone must have kidnapped Chris…
I assume it is like this on other soaps. Anyone else got a list for their show?
It would be interesting to see just how many daytime characters have had this experience.
I haven’t watched my favorite soap One LIfe to Live in a few years (like since I joined the real world and got a day job), but I do recall more than a few kidnappings.
Bo and his then wife Didi, and Bo’s ex-wife Delila were all kidnapped by a consortium of bad guys who then sent an imposter Bo back to Llanview in order to bilk the Buchanan family out of their fortune. Alas, poor Didi ended up kicking the bucket.
Bo’s next wife Sarah and her sister Megan were kidnapped
by Carlo Hesser’s mob so that they couldn’t testify in Carlo’s trial for drug-running and other dastardly deeds. Once again, Bo’s lovely wife bought the farm while her sister escaped.
Following that escapade, Bo’s fiancee then was terrorized by Todd Manning, whom she had defended in court and almost got him off a rape charge until she found out he really was guilty and threw his case. Todd had fun tormenting the woman who had gone blind and was alone in a beach-house. (It kind of makes you wonder why anyone ever dated the ever hapless Bo.)
Best of all was when nasty bitch Dorian (who never dated Bo) was imprisoned for months by the normally gooder than gold heroine Viki. Viki was having one of her recurrent episodes as “Jean” – one of her many evil split personalities who manage to take over whenever the show’s ratings need shoring up.
Some general observations about soaps:
People fall in and out of comas more often than they get the common cold.
Everyone, even the dirt poor blue collar folks who can’t afford to pay for their beloved’s much needed life-saving operation, wear expensive clothing, jet all over the world at the drop of a hat, and never seem to actually do work.
Nobody wears glasses.
Nobody has a t.v. in their house.
Good teenage girls who should know better always get pregnant the very first time they have sex, but adult women who are married and want children can never conceive.
Not only is 99.9999999% of the population caucasian, but of that number 99.99999% of all women are blonde.
I haven’t watched soaps in years. I’m sure that during all of the time I spent watching them when the boys were little, I should be able to come up with a great list, but sadly I can’t remember very many of the characters names, nevermind what happened to them.
I do remember Brooke (?) being held by a pyscho on All My Children back in 1984. They only reason I remember it is because the song they kept playing was Every Breath You Take by the Police, and for years I thought of the show when I heard that song.
Everytime I’ve flicked past Days of our Lives, someones being held against their will, but I can’t seem to watch that show for more than 10 minutes, so I couldn’t really say who.
I think that the explanation about Laura being gone from General Hospital for so long (presumed dead) was because she was being held captive on an island somewhere.
This is why I’d like to live in a soap opera world, even though I would be frequently kidnapped and presumed dead.
I used to watch GH religiously. Then I stopped. I started back again after Luke & Laura came back, then work prevented me from sticking with it.
I have no clue as to what’s going on now, only that Luke & Laura’s son Lucky got kidnapped by some psycho, I think. And someone tell me why the hell Luke & Laura aren’t together anymore?!?!?! That is SO wrong! Wrong!!

Ok, I missed a lot due to school, but this is what I have pieced together.
Remember when Elizabeth was raped? Well, Lucky found out that Luke and raped Laura, and he was enraged at both of his parents. Because of Lucky, Laura and Luke drifted apart. The whole time, Luke wanted to keep Laura, but Stephan was persistant. Added to that stress, Luke found out that Nicolas was Laura’s son. Lucky found out too, and that pissed everybody off. So anyway, Luke and Laura split temporairly. While they were apart, Stephan moved in for the kill, claiming he had never stopped loving Laura. This is wear things get a little unclear. Nicolas did something that made him be stripped of his title as Prince. Alexis got involved somehow too. Well, anyway, Stephan and Laura hooked up. But now Stephan has faked his own death, after telling Laura he no longer loved her. Meanwhile, Luke was trying to find Lucky, who was kidnapped by some psycho, with help from Helena (The bitch). Well, he and Felicia were looking for Lucky, and things hot a little heated. Eventually they ended up making love, but then Luke got framed for Stephan’s murder (Stephan isn’t really dead, he’s in France). Anyway, so Luke and Felicia are very close, but they haven’t actually declared their love. Mac is understandably pissed, and he and Laura have been consoling each other, even while he’s hunting for Luke. But we all know Luke won’t be found if he doesn’t want to be found. Lucky is now back, but he won’t have anything to do with either of his parents.
Well, that was the overall gist. I left out a lot of details.
I remember when they first brought Felicia on to the show. She had looooong blond hair, because they needed somebody with loooooong blond hair, to replace Laura. The thought of Felicia with Luke, though, repulses me. Nobody but Laura should be with him! It’s wrong! It’s just wrong! Waaaaah!
Elizabeth Webber, Audry’s granddaughter. I can’t remember who her father is though, off the top of my head. She had a sister too, but she left the show. Anyway, she was raped, and because of that, her and Lucky grew closer, while pushing Luke and Laura apart.
I agree, I actually boycotted the show for awhile after they became officially seperated. But now I’ve started watching it again.
I remember when Felicia was married to Frisco. I loved Frisco, I still do I grew up watching GH, I can’t remember NOT watching GH. It’s actually one of my first memories.
Anthony Geary grew up in my hometown. He was my bestfriend’s dad’s friend, and related to a LOT of people up there. His sister still lives up there too.
