Soccer rules question - "carrying the ball"

Are you allowed to carry the ball in soccer? Obviously you can’t use your hands or arms, but what if you could wedge the ball between your upper foot and ankle? Could you then hop on one foot towards goal? Similarly, if you could wedge it between your neck and head or neck and chest, could you run with the ball towards goal?

I think technically you could. The problem that would arise from that is that it would be very difficult for an opponent to take the ball from you without risking some kind of serious injury, so I suspect the player that tried it would get dinged for unsportsmanlike conduct, or something along those lines.

It would be ridiculously easy to take the ball from you. No real injury risk.

Carrying the ball in an otherwise legal way would count as “playing in a dangerous manner,” as in Law 12. The defense would get an indirect free kick. (I think that’s what Revenant Threshold was trying to say, depending on whom s/he meant by “the player that tried it.”)

True for hopping along with the ball between your other foot and ankle. Not so much if you had a long enough neck to wedge the ball between your head and chest. There’s also the well-known ruse (often seen, as a joke, in park games) of flicking the ball up, catching it in your jersey (but without touching the ball with your hands), and then running along with impunity. In all cases I agree the referee would call a foul against you for unsportsmanlike conduct and award an indirect free kick to the opposing team.

When I was a kid, I always thought a good strategy would be to find a player with a big Afro and let the goalie wedge the ball in his hair. Then he could just run to the other end of the field. If someone tried to kick the ball out it would be high kick.

Not strictly what the OP was asking, but a decade ago there was an up and coming Brazilian starlet called Kerlon who performed the ‘Seal Dribble’. Seems it was perfectly legal and a bit of a novelty - although he often won fouls through being hacked down in frustration.

That’s pretty nifty. Now if you could find somebody the size of say… Shaquille O’Neal to do that, he’d be practically unstoppable!

Yes you can carry the ball with your feet or legs, it’s called a bunny hop.

If you could somehow manage to do this over an extended distance, it would in theory still be legal. I could see an official citing the “playing in a dangerous manner” clause in Rule 12. But I really doubt anyone could cover a significant amount of ground and still hold the ball.
