Social Security watch thread -- from rumor to fact to speculation and back again

I’d like to consolidate discussion about proposed, rumored, and actual changes to Social Security that are flying around in the news. I’ve seen references in various threads and hope the swirling vortex will pull them into this thread.

I started collecting SS when I was 62. Bird in the hand, don’tcha know. I’ve always found the SS staff to be extremely knowledgeable and helpful. They really understand that shit! I was initially on my husband’s record, but a few years ago, I got a call from the local SS office and an extremely smart person told me that I could now switch to collecting on my own record and it would be more. It only amounted to an extra $60 per month, but I was really impressed that they reached out to me like that. I have great respect for those staffers and a bit of affection, too.

Have we seen the last of great service due to limitations now being imposed on this very important agency?

I’ll kick off with this story from NPR yesterday:

The Social Security Administration’s many proposed changes are worrying advocates

Social Security's agency has announced a flurry of changes : NPR

Among these changes are plans to cut thousands of jobs, close offices and enact new policy — including more stringent identity checks that could require in-person office visits.

Advocates warn these sweeping moves could lead to seniors and people with disabilities having a harder time getting help with their crucial benefits.

Alarm bells are ringing. Or is this just another case of Donnie crying wolf to get us all riled up?

Mods: not positive this belongs in this forum. Also not positive what tags to use. But y’all are really good at knowing that stuff, so have your way with me.

It seems to be real, and of all the things that have transpired with this regime so far this has surprised me the most. I expected Republicans in Congress to be spineless on most issues but this one is so close to their base that I assumed they would push back, and instead they seem to be just as much a bucket of dead fish as they are on so many other issues including national security, support for NATO, et cetera. It seems astonishing that GOP members of Congress are not at least making a show of pushing back but so many are silent, or just making mouth noises about objecting without even waving their hands in protest.

I’m still waiting for this regime to start seriously going after veterans’ benefits because that is a real ‘FAFO’ scenario by people who, as a group, aren’t as helpless or compliant to political fuckary but the Congress is doing absolutely nothing to assert their authority and Trump, Musk, et al continue to do an end run around the courts to an extent that that is beyond merely unprecedented and is worrying even former skeptics of how quickly the United States could slide into authoritarianism.

Stranger

Maybe Donnie will backtrack it after everyone’s blood pressure has gone through the roof and many Social Security recipients (old folks) have died from sudden strokes. But his co-president is likely to go ahead…

(Should be a gift link)

Twenty years ago, President George W. Bush’s second-term honeymoon was ending, and Social Security was to blame. Voters rebelled against his plan to partially privatize the popular retirement program and, the following year, stripped the GOP of its majorities in Congress. The events of 2005 cemented Social Security’s reputation as the “third rail of American politics.” For the next two decades, Republicans didn’t touch it.

Perhaps Elon Musk wasn’t paying attention. Back then, he had yet to vote in a U.S. election (or launch a rocket). Now, as a leader of DOGE, he’s opened an unexpected crusade against Social Security.

Senator Curtis from Utah was just talking about this on NBC. He said something like “If we don’t touch Social Security, it touches itself.” I’ve never used that phrase because it sounds too vague but I know what it means.

??? then explain it to me, please…

I think what it means is that if something isn’t done SS will “run out of money” . Which might be true, but there are many different things that could be done.

I’m guessing it means that SS will eventually collapse under it’s own weight.
Not that they’re above piling on bricks.

I assumed Social Security was going to be safe as it seems to be a core part of Republican support.

If they don’t care about future elections though as they don’t plan to allow free and honest ones, then they don’t need to care about the Fox News watchers as much I guess.

I’ve noticed that all the things that have been said and done don’t involve actually cutting benefits - they involve making things more difficult. I believe that’s specifically because what they see as the third rail is cutting benefits and they think there is at least a possibility that they will get away with making things more difficult.

First off - this clown Dudek really is proving himself to be quite the piece of work. Just a stupid shill. My impression is they went WAY down the list to find someone pliant enough, and promoted him WAY above his competency. He might have very well been an adequate bean counter/pencil pusher/middle manager, but he has no business being a policy person/public spokesman.

Second - so far everything I see suggests little other than “inconvenience” for some folk. Some folk in the boonies who - for whatever reason are unable to sign up on-line - will have to go in to the office instead of calling on the phone. And, of course, it is stupid to make those changes at a time that walk-ins have been eliminated and staff and field offices are being eliminated. A pretty significant inconvenience, but not insurmountable.

Yeah, it is possible that some changes might be proposed/enacted to actually lessen some peoples’ benefits. But I have not heard of those yet, nor does that NPR story describe them.

Of course, everyone with a brain knows that SOME changes ought to be made to SS - whether increasing the rate, raising the income subject to withholding, increasing age (or - as I recommend but few agree, in part, increasing taxes on benefits for high income/wealth recipients.) In such situations I have never heard of them proposing taking benefits away from current recipients - or even folk close to receiving bens. I guess it COULD happen, but I doubt it.

Perhaps they ARE trying to break it to move to privatization - which would be a disaster fo MANY folk.

(IMO they could make quite a few changes to the disability regs - reduce/eliminate child’s benefits, raise the ages in the Medical-Vocational Guidelines, etc. - but I suspect that would just be nibbling around the edges in terms of savings/solvency… To the contrary, the most recent significant change was to INCREASE disability recipients, by reducing the period considered past relevant work from 15 to 5 years. IMO, in many respects SSA Disability is essentially today’s welfare.)

Yeah, the attacks on SSA impress me as stupid. SSA staff is at a 50 yr low, and they issue 75 million payments/month with a damned high reliability and damned low admin costs. Yeah - it sucks if you are one of the few whose payments get fucked up. But again in the vast majority of situations, those are just inconvenient delays which eventually get fixed. Some old fart complains about hanging on the phone for 3 hrs? So what? Leave the phone on hold next to you while you are reading a book. OR mobilize to pay higher taxes to support increasing staff and resoutces to lessen the wait times!

What is unlikely to happen is that SSA will “do more with less.” As with all of DOGE’s efforts, there has been ZERO effort to make cuts aimed at reducing waste, culling the worst performers, or meaningfully prioritizing programs. Of the staff who remain, I presume most will simply continue to provide similar effort as they have in the past. Which will mean longer waits. As I told my boss, “If they want me to produce more, I will. But let’s be clear - each “unit” will not be of the same quality as my current work. I can pretty much turn out as much work as they demand - but the quality of each piece will be shit. And, what I will NOT do is donate to the cause by working OT, losing leave, etc.”.

IMO, THAT is the level of service 1/2 the voters voted for.

For anyone here who is on Social Security I strongly recommend that they try to logon to their Social Security account now! as they are strengthening the identity requirements as of March 31:

They aren’t changing the process to create an account or login from what it is now. ( You can no longer create an account with a SS username and I think if you had one, you already needed to transition to login.gov or ID.me ) What they are changing is how people can transact business - you won’t be able to complete your benefit application over the phone or change your direct deposit information over the phone. Which is going to be a pain for my 85 year old mother if she wants to change her direct deposit information but will probably not affect many 62 year olds filing an application for benefits. Although I doubt they used to accept applications over the phone without any identity verification - I would have assumed that you at least had to mail documents in. In fact, I would have assumed that the were no phone application at all.

ETA - I did get a message that’s going around advising people to print their earnings record in case they get lost. I did , even though I 'm not really afraid of the data being lost.

I just did. No issues.

There was a problem for someone I know: he uses Firefox and the last time he used it it worked fine. Now he receives an error message “Bad Request” Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand. Size of a request header field exceeds server limit." So I think they changed something that affects some users (although it could be a coincidence). Microsoft Edge still worked for him.

I’ve not been able to get to the website via the Edge browser for over a year. I have to open a different browser (I go to Chrome) and do all my SS business that way. I wonder if Firefox did an update that doesn’t work with the website.

I still can’t log in to my SS account since they changed the log in protocol last September.

I went through some major shenanigans with it when I discovered I needed an activation code. After playing agency ping pong for 2 days my local SS office said they could send me one (after 3 calls to that office alone).

I was waiting patiently for it to arrive before I left on a trip to Ireland but it arrived when I came home mid October.

I caught Covid in Ireland and was very ill when I came home.

Then I had 2 deaths in the family so I never got around to opening my non urgent mail until November by which time the activation code had expired.

I gave up and put it in the to do list pile.

I recently called my local office to start SS benefits since I found out I could collect while I am still working (I am long past my full retirement age).

I have a phone appointment on March 27, 2025 so I should just barely slide under the new requirements. I made a note to request a new activation code during that call and hope that they can deliver lol.

I have not tried to log in since last September and totally forgot how to do it but I can figure it out if I give myself some time.

My local office is only 10 minutes away and easy to access so if I have to go there it’s not an issue.

I dislike all of the uncertainty and changes and hope my situation can be handled smoothly.

The most recent Trustees Report, released in 2023, projects that the Trust Fund reserves will be depleted in 2034.
However, this does not mean that benefits will stop in 2034. If no action is taken by Congress to ensure the solvency of the Trust Funds, the Social Security program will have enough FICA taxes coming in to pay about 80% of scheduled benefits.

And if they just lifted the damned income cap then SS could pay out more than 100% of the current benefit.

For the millions of Americans like me who live outside the US, this is basically insurmountable and is essentially a cold-turkey cutoff of benefits eligibility. It’s literally impossible for us to travel back to the States every time we need to do something administratively. My wife and I are already starting to reorganize and cut back our retirement budget on the assumption that Social Security will be gone for us.

I’m sure the Trump motherfuckers are shedding a tear for me.

Stay close to Money. Good advice from my old Granny.

Is there a reason you can’t do it online? Serious question, I don’t know if there’s an issue if you are outside the US.
