Socially Conservative Nonbelievers

Are there any notable atheists or agnostics who are social conservatives (ie pro-life, against homosexual marriage, fornication etc.)?

Yes. This was the official party line of the GDR, up until the 1972 and 1968 when abortion and homosexual acts, respectively, were legalized. So we can start a list with all the prominent East German politicians of the time, such as Walter Ulbricht. As the GDR toed the Soviet Communist Party line, it wouldn’t surprise me to learn that Soviet (and other Eastern Bloc) politicans were similarly socially conservative in the sense you mean.

George Will comes to mind.

Abortion was legal in the USSR, except during Stalin’s reign.

Is it me or are we getting quite a few cases lately of almost-identical OPs?

Some of the answers to this one’s question may be found here.

I think the OP means to differentiate between “social” and “political” conservatives. But of course, since “conservative” is a relative term, whose meaning changes according to the norms of the social and political systems under consideration, the questions as asked are essentially meaningless. No doubt there are or were societies where things like abortion and homosexual activity are condoned, and a person in that society who supports the status quo would be a “social conservative”.

Charles Krauthammer and Andrew Breitbart come to mind.

I think that’s why he specified what he meant by social conservatism. He’s talking about the modern U.S. definition.

And conservatism generally means more than supporting the status quo–it usually implies an idea of wanting to go back to the previous status quo.

He gave some examples of “conservative” values in this thread, but not in the other. But three examples alone isn’t enough to uniquely characterize US conservatism, as evidenced by the fact that 1950s and 1960s East German norms seem to match what exactly he asked for.

Krauthammer is not socially conservative- he’s hawkish on foreign poloicy and generally pro-market on economic issues, but he’s pro-abortion and has no real objections to gay marriage.

I’m pretty sure the OP is asking if there are any prominent people who are anti-abortion or anti-gay marriage but are not religious.

I saw George Will declare himself an agnostic on Stephen Colbert’s show, but he has always been resolutely anti-abortion.
