Most large companies give awards for years of service. Also increased vacation and “vesting” of retirement funds.
Store rewards cards.
Disappearing service charges if you stay with the bank long enough.

Money is a way of valuing production, not morality. You don’t traditionally get money, say, for saving someone’s life.
Even if production of what society needs is in fact moral, it’s only a subset of moral behaviors.
Uh, I hear in some countries they can shorten your prison stay just for not being aggressive. And they keep records, too.
Some religions give you “points” for good deeds and negative points for bad deeds. Of course, God is the one supposed to keep track so nobody else can really know your tally for sure. I know that this is an important and elaborate aspect of Islam, with one good deed canceling out many bad deeds, as well as multipliers for certain days and so forth.
There is also a (free) award-winning story by Cory Doctorow named Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom which explores the exact question you have asked in some detail.
Yes, but they don’t go to everyone who is the #2 or #3 outstanding.
You don’t hear about city mayors getting up and saying:
“I’m pleased to announce this month’s recipient of the Reckless Driving charge. John Robinson not only drove so insanely that his mother cut off all contact, but John ruthlessly mowed down a dozen girl scouts in broad daylight and then crashed into City Hall, seriously injuring the Chief of Police. For his terrible antisocial acts, he has been chosen for this month’s dishonor and will be serving three weeks in City Jail as well as spending six months on probation. It was a tough decision because of all the terrible drivers here, but John’s senseless acts finally showed through as the worst.”
No, what happens is that if the police catch you committing Reckless Driving, you are likely to go to jail.
Yeah, that kind of makes me jealous. I volunteer at the zoo once a week but I’d be shocked if I ever got Volunteer of the Year - those are all retired people.
On the other hand, volunteering racks you up a ton of “virtual” gold stars in the form of “thank you”. One reason I enjoy it so much is that there I do a manual labor job we could make the gorillas do themselves if we really wanted them to and the people there make me feel needed and valued. At my real paying job I do a difficult, vague job that requires a masters’ degree and the people there make me feel like shit on a regular basis. Bring on the poop scoopin’!
Wikipedia has barnstars - colorful and cleverly-designed awards which users can give to other uses for a variety of good deeds. There are also service awards which are based on the number of edits made and years of service.
These don’t have any intrinsic value, but they can still serve as an effective motivator. They express that a person’s contributions are valued by the community, and are also good for prettying-up userpages.
I’m more proud of my seven barnstars than the cheesy certificates which are handed out at work from time to time.
