A few days, my parents and I were talking about people constantly getting things stolen from them or something. They briefly stated that this was because people in general are less moral than they used. Me, being the arrogant and rebellious teenager that I am, disagreed with them completely, and felt that society was either more moral than today or at the same level of morality. I feel that the media and news frequently displays the heinous acts that a handful of people commit (and none of the good things that none of us really want to hear about), and this was due to the widely accepted belief. Not knowing much about morality of the past, I’ll come to you guys for your insight.
As a historian, I can tell you that society is pretty much as moral as it has always been. Of course, there are some improvements (slavery, working conditions, equal rights, etc), but people have been complaining about how immoral modern society is since the days of Ancient Greece.
Depends on how you define morality.
Even so, I’d say things pretty much stay at the same level of morality. The reason it might seem worse as time goes on is because different “immoral” activities become accepted and “moral”, while activities that used to be “moral” become percieved as being “immoral”.
What do you consider immoral? Having pre-marital sex? Couples with open marriages? Gay sex? Smoking pot? Getting drunk on weekends? Watching X rated videos? Having oral sex in the White House?
That’s what I consider a good start to the weekend!
Seriously though, I think Guinastasia hit it on the head. If your parents are going to go the route of sex being immoral, then I’d tell them to look into Ancient Rome.
I think it’s just “Good-old-days” syndrome, where everything looks better in your faulty memory of your youth.
Cool! Can I come over?
:smack:
The answer depends on your own version of what is moral. I think that society is getting less polite. I think that is because now if someone is being an asshole and you smack the shit out of him they send you to jail. When I was in high school, if someone gave you a hard time the 2 of you got in a fight and that was the end of it. Now even saying your going to fight someone will land your ass in jail so fast it isnt funny. Where is the incentive for people to not be fuckers? Why be nice if you know that you can ride a kid and if he reacts in the slightest way , you can get him sent to jail. I dont think that more or less moral is the problem. I think its the “nanny” mentality of people that is the problem.
