Socorro, NM Dopers, Help A Guy Out!

Is this the second time in two months I’ve started a thread with this sort of title? Anyway, I’m looking at grad schools. It’s going to be either New Mexico Tech or New Mexico State, and I’m making a vist to Tech next week. The problem with Tech is housing. Apparently, there is basically no housing left at Tech, though apparently they do their best to help grad students. So I’m searching the internet in an attempt to get more information on apartments and there are either no apartments listed or the same complex with a rent of about $380 a month. Honestly, I would prefer to live on campus, as it would simplify things greatly, but if I can’t, I can’t. I’m going to make sure to bring this up when I visit, but I’d hate to make a decision where one of the major factors is housing. I suppose I could live in a place like Belen or Los Lunas (or even home) and commute an hour or two every day, but you can imagine that that is way down the list of possible solutions.

So, does anyone know what’s available in terms of apartments or even small houses in Socorro, NM?

Whatever you do, avoid any landlord with the last name Funkhouser. Trust me. I called (and still call it) “The Death Trap.” And the other tenents of theirs I’ve spoken to aren’t very fond of them either.

For $380/month, you could rent a house, and it wouldn’t necessarily be a small one. For close to campus, I used to live in this apartment complex that was literally across the street, in a one-bedroom for $275/month. If you don’t mind sharing, there’s also some duplexes that are 5 or 6 blocks away for… I’m trying to remember, but I think the total was maybe $330-ish/month, and then two of us split it. And those are just the places I’ve lived, there’s a bunch of other apartment complexes in the area.

Housing on campus is getting kind of slim, not helped by them turning one of the dorms into offices, but it’s a ridiculously cheap place to live (off campus).

Yeah, I know I could probably rent a house for that kind of cash. As I said, that was just the single hit I was getting online. Unfortunately, there’s no real “FREE Apartment Locator” type booklets for a place like Socorro online. Trust me, I’m asking about it when I visit.

I don’t really mind living off-campus, but I don’t want to be very far away. No more than a few minutes by walking, if at all possible. Being a chemistry student means that you’ve got to have quick and easy access to the lab.
