Red lemonade.

(it’s not Tizer).
Lilt is a yummy tropical/citrus beverage sold mostly in the UK. I’m quite fond of it.
Net really a soda I suppose, but try any brand of malta drinks. It’s sort of like an unalcoholic beer, but heavily sweetened. It’s generally a carribean/latin american drink, but i’ve seen it in ‘ethnic’ aisles of american grocery stores.
I’m surprised calm kiwi never mentioned Lemon and Paeroa, aka L&P
I’d point you to the product’s official site, except it’s currently a piece of crap, dominated by an annoying flash animation that makes very little sense.
Here in the low-lands we get to enjoy the tropical sweetness of Fernandes, which is originally from Suriname.
I have to agree with minor7flat5, Guarana is much better than Coke or Pepsi, and also a lot more popular in Brazil. If you ever get the chance, try some Antarctica or Brahma.
That’s the stuff! I was trying to remember what that nectar was called that I tried in NZ! Although sadly I learnt that it no longer contains any Paeroa water, so the name is slightly misleading. It’s made by Coca-Cola now, apparently.
Actually the Vimto that I’ve been able to find has Arabic (I think) writing on the can, and it’s in the middle eastern section of our local ethnic grocer. I had guessed it a British product based on the name (vim and vigor and all that). Oddly enough a check on the can in my fridge last night revealed it being canned right here in a suburb of Chicago.
I’ve seen the Malta Goya stuff in the store as well, next to the Jarritos and the Sanibel, I’ll have to check those out this weekend
Vimto is widely available (in tins) throughout London. It’s bloody awful though.
No mentions for Jamaican Ginger Beer? Corking stuff. Blows your head off.
I have a fairly serious Orangina habit
And there is of course Um Bongo - they drink it in the Congo.
At the Coke Museum in Atlanta you can sample their products from around the world that are not sold in the U.S. I don’t remember the names of any of the stuff I sampled there, but I do remember most of them being horribly sweet.
I had a nice Jarritos pineapple soda at a tiny Mexican restaurant tonight, and their mandarin orange soda is very good too. I also love Vimto, which I always get at the Indian grocery store.
In Miami, we have all the Latin-American soft drinks at the supermarkets, but I’m not a big fan of the “malta”-type sodas, like Ironbeer and Malta Hatuey. Some of the Jamaican sodas and ginger beers are very good, but with a real “zip” to them–not sweet/bland like American ginger ales. I’ve always meant to try Kola Champagne, Inca Cola, and some of the more exotic flavors like tamarind. Of course we have Orangina in the soft drink aisle as well, and it isn’t bad either.
Define interesting. It tastes vaguely of cream soda with a strong bubblegum note. One of the few liquids on earth that doesn’t mix well with Vodka.
Someone needs a bottle of Mecca Cola
I hope that the NZ Shop has L&P when I go in on Tuesday. A trip to London is not complete without a bottle of L&P(preferably the Dry variety).
If you can handle the thought of not actually drinking it, L&P can be used to make the easiest, fastest, lightest and nicest scones in the world. (Flour, cream and lemonade or L&P - mix lightly and bake - serve with whipped cream and strawberries or jam).
Also , L&P and Southern Comfort - nectar of the gods.
Mmmm.
Simon - missing home comforts
in bolivia, there is a drink that tastes like cream soda mixed with dr pepper. they call it
SIMBA.
thats some goooooood stuff…
I remember Miranda orange soda from my childhood as a super carbonated orange drink, but 30 years down the road, I don’t recall hearing about it at all. Is it still made? Was it bottled overseas?
…I’m glad that L & P is getting the respect it deserves on this thread, and surprised to see the number of fans abroad there are!
I could go for an Afri Cola.
Lots of info on soft drinks here:

Yeah, I really can’t think of it mixing well with anything. To be more specific, it tastes a lot like Canfield’s Swiss Creme soda (which I think is awful) crossed with Hubba Bubba soda (anyone remember this pink concoction?)
In Europe, you can find all sorts of Fanta flavors. My favorites wer always Fanta Lime and Fanta Wild Berries. Apparently, in other parts of the world, there’s Fanta Morango, Fanta Mango, Fanta Pomelo, Fanta Cucumber Melon, Fanta Passionfruit, and Fanta Sapaya.
In Hungary, the most popular softdrink behind Coke & Pepsi was Traubisoda, a grape-flavored soda made with sparkling mineral water. Unlike most grape sodas, it was not artifically dyed purple, but rather light, almost muscatel-colored. And it tasted like pure grape must mixed in with sparkling water and perhaps an extra bit of sugar. It wasn’t sickly sweet, though, and made with real grapes. Refreshing and nice.
Who knew L&P had escaped NZ? It’s supposed to be “world famous in New Zealand” not “somewhat known overseas”.
I developed a liking for it during the three years that I lived in Wellington. It’s reasonably easy to obtain here - not surprisingly, given the large ex-pat NZ community.
