Soft porn ads

All over the message board are ads for “bonvoyages” “female athletes show too much!”. It’s almost every single ad on the board for me. I am also getting messages that those ads contain viruses. What I’m not sure about is are the ads coming from me or from SDMB? I don’t access porn so I don’t think it’s from me.

The SDMB does not provide any ads. We basically contract out with an ad provider who generates the ads for us. Most of these ads are targeted, so they are based on things like your browser history, any cookies that may have been set while you have been on the internet, your location, and any other information that they may have been able to figure out about you. We do not give them any of this information, by the way.

The ad broker serves up ads that fit the advertising package that we have with them. I don’t have the details of this package, but I do know that they aren’t supposed to include porn.

We also use a much higher quality ad provider than we have in the past. While many years ago viruses and malware were par for the course, we dumped those ad providers long ago and you shouldn’t be getting anything like that now. This makes me think that you picked up a bit of malware somewhere along the way. You don’t have to access porn to get this kind of malware.

I will report this to our admin just in case it is coming from one of our ad providers, but at this point I think that it’s much more likely that it’s coming from you.

If you can get any screen shots of the ads, please send them to me at EngineerCompGeek@gmail.com

This may be a coincidence, but as of yesterday I started seeing mostly this ad:

Heh, I’ve been getting the same ads for bonvoyaged[.]com on YouTube pages for the last month. Same nonsense pitch about risque historical photos. YT at least had a preference I could set to stop seeing that ad.

I’ve been getting them here and on youtube. Every single time I click “block this ad” both here and there. I think they are slowly going away for me.

I see those ads all the time on Bored Panda, on a computer I’ve never used for porn, so I don’t think they’re based on browser history.

I tried finding out information on them, and what the consensus seems to be is that they show a risqué come-on that’s not even part of the slideshow just to get people to click.

Risqué here means only that they show cleavage. No naughty bits are ever shown in the ads or the slideshow. I wouldn’t call that soft porn by any definition, although they may be NSFW.

One ad I’ve encountered elsewhere: “playground equipment”, under which is a picture of an inflatable sex doll.

I have no idea how such ads started turning up on my work computer.
