Software for capturing/editing video (from DVD)

The title says it all. I’ve got some home DVDs (mostly of performances I’ve been in and such) and I want to extract some bits to put on YouTube, my website, etc etc. Anyone know any decent software? Free is nice, but I’d pay for a quality program.

MPEG Streamclip is a free option that I believe can do what you need. I’ve only ever used the Mac version, so I can’t speak for the Windows version (you don’t specify which platform you’re on, but I’m assuming Windows). I find the interface to be a little cluttered and confusing (probably because the program can do a ton of different things with various media formats), but it’s free and a solid program that will do what you need with some work.

I’ve been using DVDxDV Pro, a not inexpensive program, for a few years. It’s a little buggy, especially for the money I paid (okay, the company I was working for at the time paid for it, so I can’t complain too much), but it’s simple, does one thing, and gets the job done.

Cinematize is a slick (again, not cheap) commercial option. I’ve never used it, but it’s available for both Mac and Windows.
