soil erosion in Haiti and similar - so does affected land become fully infertile and very cheap?

so we have all heard that after trees got cut down Haiti got lots of soil erosion. Ok, so what now? Is the eroded land like a desert where there is no farming? Or is it just transitioned to some less intensive form of agriculture which it is still capable of supporting?

Also, so are the soil remediation techniques nowadays so expensive that it doesn’t make sense to buy that eroded land for cheap from the owners, restore soil fertility and run it as a modern farm? Or do foreigners just not want to do any sort of investment or business in Haiti to avoid Zimbabwe style problems whereas in a more stable situation soil remediation would have made economic sense?
