Solo: A Star Wars Story seen it thread. (Open spoilers)

I thought both L3 and K-2SO were among the best characters and best parts of those movies. HK-47 was great too in KOTOR.

Oh and I hope I’m not the only one who thought of the line from the ROTJ commercial when I saw the disguise.

Thank you that ad made my day!

I did not expect the new actor to be just like the older Han. For example there have been a bunch of actors who played James Bond . But I guess SW is different to fans.

Is it, though? I don’t recall ever hearing anything but praise for Ewan McGregor’s performance back when, and Donald Glover seems to be doing terrific right now.

And don’t forget your darth eye shadow!

Apropos of nothing but Paul Bettany is much better in Solo than in Infinity War, something I remarked to my friend with whom I a saw both, as we left the theatre. He agreed especially since he thought that unlike his comic book version he is such a light-weight in Infinity War (and just about all other MCU films).

Paul Bettany reminded me a lot more like his character in A Knight’s Tale (Chaucer). A lot more declarative pronouncements to his manner of speech.

I am shocked people said anything positive about episodes 1 to 3. Especially on this site where I always read how those 3 movies were total garbage.

For example people kept telling me to watch a 2 hour youtube video by a guy with a dumb voice explaining how bad episode 1 was.

Went in with rock-bottom expectations and was pleasantly surprised. I can’t say for sure if that’s what’s required to enjoy it. It was fun, though the last 40 minutes or so dragged quite a bit. Ehrenreich was nowhere near the disaster the rumors made him out to be. He was no Harrison Ford, but he did the job.

Glover, on the other hand was spectacular. Practically channeling Billy Dee, while keeping fresh and not a mere impression.

The side characters were varying degrees of charming. I particularly liked Rio and was sad to see him go, even if he kept mispronouncing Wookiee for some reason. Speaking of mispronouncing, I did love the callback to Lando’s version of “Han”. (Now if only they could explain Tarkin and Dodonna’s Princess LEE-uh pronunciations…). I could not understand Val’s motivation at all. I can see someone blowing themselves up for a cause, but the cause here was just to score a big haul of money. And it’s hard to spend your share of a heist when dead. It wasn’t a noble sacrifice, it just came off as dumb.

L3 was fun, though I did immediately think they were trying a retread of K2SO, and even more so when she met a similar end. (And I thought it was Gwendolyn Christie the whole time too…) Lando’s reaction was a little over the top, too. Couldn’t they repair her? She seemed no worse off than 3PO in TESB and he was fine.

I kind of groaned at the parsec thing. I always thought that was best left as an ambiguous screw-up, but whatever. Also, the escape pod business was really silly. Of all the things I thought needed a backstory in SW, the notch in the front of the Falcon was not one of them.

Also, what was up with the wookiees Chewie saved? Why could we barely see them? and when we did, was it my imagination, or did they have shaved faces? Wookiee-human hybrids? burn victims?

Enough harping, I guess… other good stuff: The Han/Chewie meetup and growing attachment was nice. The action scenes were fun. I liked most of the twists and betrayals, even if some were predictable. Loved Han shooting first. Personally, I loved seeing Maul, though I can’t believe they actually went that far in pulling from the cartoons. I can’t imagine that more than 20% of the people who saw Solo had seen Maul’s revival in CW and Rebels. Baffling decision.

It didn’t always feel Epic enough to be Star Wars, and I don’t think it will be one of my favorites of the series, but it was a fun ride, and about as good as it could be given that it was never really necessary in the first place.

Maybe if a bunch of actors had played Han that would be one thing. Here though you are playing another actor almost as much as you are playing a character. I thought Alden did fine, though he was no Harrison Ford.

I thought it was just my screening, but a lot of people have complained that the dark scenes were really murky and hard to discern detail, and that was like most of the first half of the movie. So something went screwy with the colour grade. I hope it’s better in the BluRay release.

Especially since the ANH-era Falcon was supposed to have “several” escape pods:

Of course, the Falcon design doesn’t have room for “several” (or really even one) escape pod–the line is leftover from when the Tantive IV design was supposed to be the Millennium Falcon.

I was thinking maybe the guy that looked like Maul was someone else from his species or something. But it inspired me to start watching Clone Wars, and although it’s a kid’s show and I didn’t like the art style, the art style grew on me and there are some fairly good action scenes. And lots of troopers die, people get hurt, etc. So it’s got some edge to it. The thing I don’t like about it the most is while it’s a serial story, it jumps forward in time between episodes sometimes, so you think you missed or forgot something. But still worthwhile and much better than the prequel movies.

I was glad Solo wasn’t epic, everything doesn’t have to be epic. I think that’s what The Avengers suffers from, everything has to be “save the world.”

Beckett explained it after Han dumped the load, they were working for Crimson Dawn and failing meant death. She sacrificed herself for Beckett.

Of course, the Falcon’s escape pod played a fairly major role in TLJ.

I liked it! A double-crossing mentor, a triple-crossing femme-fatale, a heist and a prison break. I always had the impression that Han had dumped whatever he was carrying for Jabba not long before Star Wars started, but it looks like Jabba’s spent decades chasing after him and I found that nod to the audience a little too on the nose.

I enjoyed watching Han decide he really really liked the Millenium Falcon.

I figured it meant Han hauled cargo for Jabba many times over the course of that decade, and it was on the last run before ANH that he dumped cargo.

The more I think about it, the more I am convinced Han, Lando, and Qira will all appear in the Boba Fett movie. If Han is working for Jabba, and Qira is Number One in a crime syndicate for Maul, they will cross paths in Boba Fett’s timeline at least once or twice. That may conclude the story right there, but the Kenobi movie could easily also be part of the plotline too.

Why set things up, but insist the Solo movie is a one-off? It’s the only thing that makes sense. Lucasfilm haven’t officially announced those movies because Solo had to come out first for any story details to make sense to anyone.

So how does anyone else get unrefined coaxium to this refinery? Why have a refinery there?

My impression is that Han is going to join up with new crime boss Jabba’s organization. He’ll work for him for a while before dumping the cargo right before ANH. The Jabba/Han scene from ANH makes it clear that they had a pretty long term relationship.
