Solo: A Star Wars Story seen it thread. (Open spoilers)

Everyone seems to have a problem with the actor playing Solo. I thought he did a good job.

What I did have trouble with was a space dwelling Lovecraftian monster the size of Manhattan Island that lived in a…what was that? Dust cloud? With rocks to bump against? What did it live on? How did it reproduce? (Maybe the one in the asteroid in ESB was a juvenile?)

When I first saw it, I thought it was a purrgil, a space whale first seen in Star Wars Rebels. Apparently the creature in the Kessel Run was a Summa-verminoth.

Yep, that was the worst part of the movie for me. It just stood out in contrast to the very Star Wars-y feel of the rest of the movie as something not belonging in the universe. Maybe it was the light around it that made it seem like a supernatural creature rather than a regular being to me. Or maybe it was the busyness of that scene, so jam-packed with stuff that it looked like a dungeon lair rather than a relatively-sparse space scene.

Looks like someone is a MvC fan huh?

I’m thinking it was more of a Homerian monster.

Just saw it and the best I can say is it was “fine”. Kinda like a meal at TGI Fridays. It’s fine. Nothing to write home about.

I’m a sucker for Emilia Clarke but that was about as good as it got.

I think the failure was in the writing. Just a pure mediocre effort. I never got the feeling of Han being a rogue or even Lando as some swashbuckling character (although Glover did better than Ehrenreich). The situations they got in to were manufactured and not organic within the story. Just jump from one mess to the next. Never did I feel concerned for the characters’ well being. Never did I feel the bond being created between any of them.

Also, there were no real stand out moments or characters. We can all quote numerous moments from the first Star Wars. I bet most here can’t remember a single line of this movie. I saw it about two hours ago and it is all entirely forgettable.

I say this as a huge Star Wars fan BTW. Was raised on this stuff as a kid (was ten when Star Wars came out).

Whack-a-Mole, that’s pretty much how I feel.

The characters are great and all the actors bring their best. The problem is that the situations are rather uninteresting, and the action scenes tedious to sit through. The Kessel Run bit was outright boring for me anyway, with no dramatic tension to it.

Dryden Voss was an alright villain; he was designed a bit too obviously as “villain who gets his comeuppance” though. If there was any Star Wars movie where the Bag Guy could have reasonably won, this would have been a good one. Aside from being at aleast a little unexpected, it would have been a good point about this era of the series - this is not the Time When Good Triumphs. Also, it would have been a good marker on Han’s journey to disaffection.

My understanding is Chewbacca hangs with Han because Chewbacca has a life debt to Han because Han saved him.

I never saw that in the movie. Or rather, there were LOTS of times where Han was doing something that might be considered saving Chewie but which one was the life debt? All of them? You’d think something like that would be a standout moment. If it happened it passed without remark.

Hasn’t Chewie saved Han’s bacon as well?

Sure but (supposedly) Chewie initially hitched his wagon to Han’s because of a life debt.

I am not sure if that is a forever thing or not with Wookies but presumably Chewie and Han grew close so Chewie was never looking for an out to get away.

Wookies are a lot longer lived than humans so he could very well see his time with Han as his rebellious youth.

So where is Chewie in the current* timeline as of “The Last Jedi”?

*Acknowledging that unless the opening crawl of the original “Star Wars” meant that thirty years counted as “a long time ago”, even TLJ is still presumably in the distant past.

Am I missing something? Did you not see him in the film?

So he’s piloting the Falcon when they escape at the end? I don’t remember but I will take your word for it. Did he really do anything in the movie?

He piloted the Falcon throughout the film, including at the end. He also kicked down Luke’s door when the latter wouldn’t talk to Rey.

He also learned that Porgs are friends, not food.

I liked it quite a lot, more than either sequel but not quite as much as Rogue One.

Ehrenreich was OK but the movie put a lot pressure on him; not only is he playing an iconic character but there is barely a scene in the film without him. I think perhaps it needed a stronger villain with more scenes as a secondary focus.

Glover was good and I think he will be better able to carry a film so I hope they make a Lando film some time.

I am a bit surprised the movie has disappointed at the boxoffice. It got decent reviews, has a decent IMDB rating and it is a Star Wars Film so should have been an automatic hit. Possibly it is coming too soon after the last one.

I hope the film recovers at the box office and the next one does better because I would like to see more films in the timeline between the OT and the prequels.

Well, considering that Solo bombed, and they announced a Boba Fett movie, I think they should have Han be a secondary character in that movie (Han and Fett just go together), and tie up Solo’s loose ends in that movie. I don’t think they should make another Solo anthology movie again anytime soon. I liked this movie, and wish it did better at the box office, but it’s too risky.

I noticed Solo was pretty light on space battles and scenes in space. It was mostly planet bound. I think Star Wars fans want more spaceship pew pew.

I also think they want more Force and Lightsabers too.

I thought it was pretty exciting, planet bound scenes or not. The scenes in the maw were pretty cool, the star destroyer and the space monster. (How the hell did it get so big, eating an occasional spaceship less than 1% of its size?)

I think the box office numbers are a result of star wars fatigue, and the fact that The Last Jedi didn’t appeal to a lot of people.
