Your ideas intrigue me, and I would like to subscribe to your newsletter.
Really, Madawc. Mightn’t you be taking this a bit too seriously?
Saaaayyy…
What have you got against Jedis, anyway? Are you some sort of anti-Jedite or something? Did Palpatine get to you, too? Did you turn to the dark side? What’s the deal?
Just don’t try to sell me on all that midichlorian bullshit. I’m a Cafeteria-Jedi.
Ok, I think it’s time to paraphrase a philosohpy I adhere too. It will explain why I spoke up in another similar thread recently.
“Mock not the religion of another, for who is to say yours is more correct or wise?”
In this world today, a lot of people are finding different ways to express their spirituality. Who is to say that one way is better than another? It’s a matter of individual expression.
Here are some of the precepts that the Jedis follow, just so you all can finally see what you are laughing at. These people may seem silly at first, because they have chosen a name for their branch of religion from fiction. However, the ideas they practice are worthy of respect. Let them grow a bit, and let’s see how this religion develops.

Jedi teachings are not such a new idea. Here’s a run down of the basic precepts.
Emotional mastery.
Acting only when appropriate.
Eschewing possessions.
Eschewing attachments.
Concentration and focus of the will.
Connectedness of all life.
A belief that Man has to work to overcome his base nature.
Denial of the self.
Understanding the reality of things without preconceptions.
There are other things, but if you look at it, you see Bhuddism, Taoism (a little Wicca maybe, the idea that the will can manipulate reality) , Q’ballah.
Are people so flaky to do (or claim to do) what mankind has done for thousands of years? Lucas made it accessible to the masses and gave it a new name, but its a very old (and rather nice I might add) bag of tricks. No need to have it be a “recognized” religion, it already is. From the messages on this page.
(I had already posted the link above in a previous thread, but since I put up content from the page, I thought it better to link.)
Look, Madawc, I’m more than willing to share in the outrage, but before I do, you need to explain one thing: why I should give a shit. What’s it to me if someone puts “Jedi” as their religion on the census? How does this affect me and mine? Right now, all you’ve got is, “I don’t think it’s funny,” and judging by your jokes so far in this thread, you’ve really got no business criticizing other people’s sense of humor.
We should then be celebrating in Canada. We have a much lower percentage of Jedi!
I don’t have a problem with extra info on government census. Not only do I find it rather interesting to know things like the religous makeup of our country but I agree with the posters who said that it can help streamline government services. The government helps fund Catholic schools right? It would therefore be useful to know how many Catholics there are when the education budgets come down.
In addition, census are always of interest to historians. I’d hate to screw some poor grad student’s research up in 2103.
On a semi-realted note, have you ever stopped to think how much future American school children are going to hate us for electing George Bush, the Clinton, then another George Bush? We are going to blow so many future grade point averages over that.
On census forms, those times when I do not ceremonially set fire to them anyway, I lie outrageously - about anything and everything. My cat filled one out once though, or I did on her behalf, and set fire to my own.
Frankly if it were not compulsory I may not have so much of a problem, but that is my take on it. Call yourself Jedi? Why not, it is as meaningful as any other answer
