That story would never be believable. Too many holes.

Tangent: the original character was called “The ugly American” because he was ugly. He was actually a nice guy. It was the other Americans in the book who caused the book to be conceived as anti-American.
It’s like learning that Dostoevsky’s The Idiot, wasn’t really an idiot but only appeared to be idiotic by his peers due to their own petty ethical and moral failings. Ha! as if.
My brain was confusing The Ugly American with The Quiet American, and I thought “But Brendan Fraser isn’t ugly.”
We were bothered by it, but like that one friend who always seems to get into a scuffle at the pub, we had your back.
Now, you’re not only getting into a scuffle at the pub, you’re trying to sucker punch us as well, and that’s not cool, buddy.
And this is why i thought about doing it around 2000, but now feel it would be grossly rude to actual Canadians.
Australians are very embarrassed when they find out I’m Canadian not American and apologize. I gently tell them, if you are guessing …guess Canadian first then if they are Americans they won’t mind. ( I think ).
