Some Banishment Questions

Maybe it’s me (or because I’ve finally taken some time to visit the Pit), but it seems that more people are getting banned than I’m used to seeing.

So that got me wondering a couple wonderments…

  1. What mechanism do mods use to prevent the banned from re-registering under different aliases. Is it IP addresses? (Or is that information privvy only to the High Order of Moderators and you’d have to melt my brain if it was revealed to me?)

  2. Trolls seem to get the boot mighty quick. I was wondering about general stats of bootage: Like, what’s the roughly estimated percentage of new members who get tossed out within a month (e.g. Is it like 2% of new members are trolls?). And are there seasonal aspects to trolls (like when school starts and more people get back online so there are more shenanigans)?

  3. Under what conditions would a banned member ever be readmitted? I know it has happened.

It’s not life or death important for me to know, just curious.

  1. IP addresses and posting style are contributing factors. The remaining parts of it are, indeed, not for public consumption – a small amount of thought would explain why.

  2. I have no idea what the SDMBTQ (…troll quotient) might be. It seems common to get dosages of trollery when school ends and when it resumes, but other factors contribute too (e.g., an attempt at instigating a board war).

  3. Simple process: The person has to apologize to TubaDiva (or perhaps to other administrators) and indicate his or her interest in returning and willingness to abide by board rules. Several people have in fact done so and returned as posters in good standing.

Don’t be surprised if this thread gets closed; threads asking about trollery tend to attract trolls, so a moderator is likely to add more definitive statements to mine and lock it. It’s no reflection on you, just a bit of policy, again for self-evident reasons.

No problem, I was just curious about general stats and moderating. Common sense dictates that only the mods are privvy to the classified stuff.

I assumed question one couldn’t be answered in detail lest naughty ones try to work around it. I was just wondering because it seems pretty solid as far as seeing through disguises.

Still vaguely curious about the SDMBTQ, but I never really took into consideration the effect of a board war.

Thanks though. Very general answers is all I was looking for.

I don’t see the need to add anything to Polycarp’s well-written answer.
