In its own way, it’s actually kind of fascinating. There are a substantial number of posters in this thread to whom not only is what I wrote not obvious, it’s obvious to them that I’m completely wrong and it seems to be unfathomable that anyone would think otherwise.
Which is what OP said they were going to do in the OP.
Which is what OP indicated they were going to do in Post #16, which is 100 posts ago. And yet, here the rest of us are, arguing for another 100+ posts about how obvious it is that OP’s space is private property, with some folks dropping in to suggest “solutions” like chains, and caltrops (I think the caltrops were suggested in jest…),
And the other funny thing is my OP was partially about relating a “this thing just happened to me, weird huh? Anybody else have to deal with this sort of thing?” and I figured my story would get discussed along with “yeah, that reminds me of that one time” replies. We did get the gravel drive story from erysichthon which was interesting, but it’s been a parking Rorschach discussion otherwise.
There is no code. I’m simply pointing out that the assumptions about the sanctity of private property in the face of minor, temporary, sporadic encroachments and the just consequences thereof are not necessarily shared by every single person in the world, in the country, and in your community. And it’s not a moral or ethical failing. It’s simply a different point of view. You can choose to be a hardass about this, but this is a choice you are making. You can say “the law permits me to do this,” but the law doesn’t compel you to do it. And it doesn’t make you a better person if you do. You can choose to be a nicer person and help make the world around you a less mean place.
You mean like the people that violate other people’s IP on the internet because they think they have the right to distribute your work because they are doing you a favor you neither want or asked for
Or like the people that would continually block my driveway so I couldn’t get to work because “it’s a public street”?
I wonder if they would feel the same if someone else used their property without permission. I suspect not.
I think the story has been told, and discussed from lots of perspectives. Lots of constructive suggestions were made, along with some less constructive comments.
But now it seems to have devolved into posters yelling at each other. So Imma gonna close the thread.
