Some Like it Hot: The musical (if you like musicals definitely try to see this...it's excellent)

I saw the musical, “Some Like it Hot” tonight and it was great! Truly one of the best musicals I have seen in a long time.

It is the story from the movie of the same name (1959 - Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis) except this is a musical.

Everything about it was great. Great music, great singing, great dancing, great choreography, and funny. They lean into the gender identity theme more explicitly than the movie did (given the times they were made that is not surprising) but it’s handled well (it’s not trying to be political at all).

The show is touring the US. I do not know if it will be the same cast in all cities but I hope so because they were really, really good. If you enjoy musicals and theater this should not be missed IMHO.

Here’s one review (you can find many others):

I saw a touring show called Sugar in the UK 20-25 years ago at a local theatre which sounds more or less the same as this. It was great fun and as a massive fan of the film I loved it.

But surely, nobody’s perfect?

Unfortunately they fiddled with that line. The one miss, I think, in the whole show.

I will say the chase scene near the end is fantastic. Worth going just for that.

Here’s a look at what the show is (brief 1-minute promotion from the Broadway version):

I saw it last month. (They often start their tour here in Schenectady). Definitely a good one, but it doesn’t quite achieve greatness.

I agree it doesn’t quite turn that corner. It is not Hamilton or Cabaret but it is a lot of fun and enjoyable.

It’s coming to San Francisco in January. I think I might go see it.

Sugar was an earlier musical based on the same movie. I thought the new production was just Sugar with some songs added, but it appears to be an entirely different production with an entirely new libretto.

It’s a fun show. Make a night on the town of it if you can.

Please let us know what you thought of it if you go. I’d like your opinion.

We saw it on Broadway a couple of years back. The chase scene was some truly excellent choreography, and was the highlight of the show for me. To be honest, I found everything else pretty forgettable.

Darn it all. I only started going to Broadway in Portland this summer, and SLIH closed on December 30 last year.

But I did just an hour ago get back from a matinee performance of “Wicked”, which closes tonight. It was astounding (he said, sneak-braggingly).
