Someone tried to scam me, what can I do

i just got a call from someone pretending that I got an $8000 government grant for school. They knew my name and address, but I hung up on them.

It was essentially that scam, they knew my name and address, but I hung up before they could ask for bank account info or social security number info. He was talking a bit about ‘personal ID numbers’ before I hung up on him.

I just called my bank and they said i’d be fine since I didn’t give any bank account numbers or social security numbers, however I still don’t know what to do beyond that. *69 was blocked, obviously, and I don’t know who I could report this event to. And i’m still slightly worried that they may already have enough info to get into my account (which is doubtful because if they did they wouldn’t be calling me, and all I did was verify my name and address by saying ‘yeah’).

So who do I report this to?

If you’ve got the date and time of the call, let the cops know and they can talk to the phone company to get the phone number, even if it was blocked. I don’t know how much interest the cops will show, but that would be the way to go, IMHO.

From what I understand people have a very hard time getting the cops to investigate id theft unless it involves a lot of money. You may want to contact the three credit companies and ask them to put a flag on your account for unusual activity. ID theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in the US.
