Something fell off my car ....

Actually on the drive shaft? Like it spins around with it?

Is there another one? I wonder if it’s part of a U-Joint?

after the drive shaft, attached to the front of what I suppose is the four wheel drive. I have an explosion of these parts, but it doesn’t seem to be on there. There’s a toilet roll type bracket, mounted horizontally and the cylinder fits into that horizontally, there’s rubber on the bracket, but not a boot and there doesn’t seem to be anything to attach it with.

What you’re talking about is the rear differential.
Also, by having an “explosion of these parts” I assume you mean a diagram…I read that wrong the first time.

Like it’s just supposed to be wedged in there, but its not supporting anything else. I’ll swing by the mechanic tomorrow. Wish I could get a snap of it for you.

No camera phone?

Maybe it’s a handle so the bad guy can hang on to the bottom of your car when you drive across an old desert road.

Yes, diagram of parts. So that’s what dropped out - the rear differential? Or is that what my mystery part is attached to?

Did you get this car new or used? From googling yesterday and today it seems that Sidekicks get pretty heavily modified (as much as Civics it would seem), I wonder if it was an aftermarket part. Maybe something installed to reduce vibration in the drive system.

I tried getting under there with the laptop camera, but too tricky.

Oh, well used and at least ten years old. It’s more a Jimney than a side kick, but this is the Caribbean so there are hybrids formed for sure.

It’s a travel limiter or bump stop. If it was attached to the top of the differential, it is supposed to both keep the rear from dropping too much or rising too much in relation to the chassis. It could also be used to keep the axle from twisting and if so it would be attached to the front part of the differential, just behind the UJoint where the driveshaft connects.

I think it’s this then. Googling it doesn’t come up with anything too similar to the whole arrangement but that’s maybe because it’s an old model.

Ha! Didn’t notice this earlier, I was wondering if it was a secret mechanics loo paper stash.

Ouch, makes me wonder if the “Something that fell off my car” was the bad guy, along with the handle.

So you think he might be still attached to the underside of the other car, this could get unpleasant.

Take the shortcut through the cactus field when you go to work.
