Think yourself lucky - a few years ago I lived in a block of flats with a relatively insecure communal staircase, under which a homeless person was in the habit of defecating. We never caught him at it. (I assume it was a him…and I assume he was homeless, but perhaps it was a resident with ‘issues’. Perhaps he’s still doing it - I moved.)
More recently, I’d been getting cat scat in my veg beds. A cheap citrus-oil based granular product from the local supermarket did the trick, but pepper, as carnivorousplant suggested, would probably also work and be a tad cheaper.
There used to a skunk path through my driveway in my old house, which wouldn’t have bothered me, but then I got another dog. Red pepper - ground, not flakes - at the base and head of the driveway for a few days in a row and occasionally thereafter put at stop to that.
It did not stop the local cat, s/he would only avoid the driveway maybe one or two nights after pepper was applied. Vinegar worked a bit better for the cat. And my house cat avoids aromatic herbs.
I’d spray the deck with vinegar or lemon juice frequently until the animal stopped visiting, along with the red pepper in case my previous experience was an anomaly, and plant some strong herbs in the window boxes. I’d leave the other planters alone, so the animals has an option to the newly refinished decking if the vinegar and lemon juice and ground red pepper and rosemary don’t work.
It’s a cat. They love flowerpots for pooping. The fact that the cat isn’t covering the poop means that s/he is trying to indicate his/her dominant status. “I am dominant kitty, smell my poop!”
Just cover the soil in the flowerpots with pebbles/small rocks. They will also help prevent the soil from drying out.
So the OP needs to convince him to take the left at Albuquerque.

When we had work done on our house, we asked the contractor why the port-a-potty on our front lawn was kept locked. Seriously: He said that they have found that if they leave one unlocked, mailmen will use it.
