Song Covers We Don't Need To Hear

A cool thing about pop music is the unexpectedly cool cover, especially when the cover takes a song from one genre of music and expresses it in another. Johnny Cash remade NIN’s “Hurt” to great acclaim. Whitney Houston’s cover of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” is perhaps her most famous song. Almost everyone in the world with a broadband connection has downloaded Mat Weddle’s live acoustic version of OutKast’s “Hey Ya!” Tori Amos is famed for her, well Amosish cover of “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

But there are some covers, I gotta tell you, that just would not work out. For instance:

Celine Dion covers “Killing In The Name”
The Beastie Boys cover “I Am Woman”
Carrie Underwood covers “For Those About To Rock”
Got any other covers you wouldn’t want to pay a lot of money to hear?

Well, one I have heard that I originally thought was a parody:
Frank Sinatra covering “Mrs. Robinson” I swore it was Joe Piscopo from his SNL days.

Isn’t there that whole album of weird covers that weren’t considered weird when it came out? It had Leonard Nimoy singing some Hobbit-related song, and Shattner slaughtered something, too.

Ones I would not like to hear:
[ol]
[li]Amy Winehouse - S&G’s Bridge Over Troubled Waters[/li][li]Jessica Simpson -Ring of Fire[/li][li]Limp Bizkit - Nick Drake’s Pink Moon.[/li][/ol]

I’m still waiting for my American Idol LedZeppelin Cover Night

Pretty much anyone performing a Beatles’ hit other than The Beatles or American English. Particularly Mae West.

Crispin Glover performing “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’” like he’s in dire need of a laxative.

OTOH, I’d prolly get a Shatner-esque kick out of Christopher Walken covering “These Boots Are Made For Walken.”

Trouble is, all the really terrible covers have actually been done…

Girls Aloud dire cover of Walk this Way
Rolf Harris covering Stairway to Heaven
Scissor Sisters (whom I like) covering Comfortably Numb as a dance remix

I heard an awful cover of Alanis Morrisette Uninvited on the radio the other day, too (some band called Freemasons).

The list goes on and on

Si

Yeah, there’s a whole Christopher Walken covers album that we don’t need to hear:

“These Boots Are Made for Walken”
“Walken in LA”
“Walken on Sunshine”
“Walken after Midnight”
“Walken on the Sun”
“Walken in Memphis”
“Walken on the Moon”
“Walken Disaster”
“Walken in a Winter Wonderland”

I could go on, you know.

I am now imagining the above songs covered by Christopher Reeve.

I am so going to hell.

You’re referring to Golden Throats. Shatner’s “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” is often mentioned, but he’s even worse on "Mr. Tamborine Man**.

The Album/CD was so successful that there were several followups.

Public Enemy’s 911 is a Joke by Duran Duran

Walken One and Only?

I could do without the following:

Bob Dylan sings The Standards
Joanna Newsom covers Aretha Franklin
Donovan reinterprets Robert Johnson
Judas Priest sing Both Sides Now*

*Actaully, that one might be entertaining.

Ooooh, I’ve got one. What if Kenny G teamed up with … wait for it … Earth, Wind & Fire … and they recorded an Outkast song? How about “The Way You Move”? Surely nobody would want to hear that!

Oh you may think you’re joking about Celine Dion but here she is doing something awful to AC/DC:

There’s another one out there of Shania Twain covering the same song, badly, to a starry-eyed audience. Evidently she’s a fan of AC/DC (her husband is Mutt Lange who produced some of their records) but sometimes the best way to show your appreciation is silence…

I got plenty of covers on my computer, a short list of horrible covers i have found;

Angra - Kashmir (Led Zepplin cover)
Avril Lavigne - Chop Suey (System Of A Down Cover)
Avril Lavigne - Fuel (Metallica Cover)
Avril Lavigne - Knocking On Heavens Door
Busta Rhymes - Iron Man (Black Sabbath Cover)
NOFX - Iron Man (Ozzy cover)
Pennywise - Stand By Me (Ben E. King Cover)
Snoop Dogg - Sad But True (Metallica Cover)
White Skull - Stairway To Heaven (Led Zepplin cover)

Holy shit.

The thing is, I might actually buy that for the sheer awfulness of it if I could get it cheap.

Leonard Nimoy singing The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins (YouTube link). Come for the bad 1960’s dancing, stay for the WTF?

I like that version. It makes me laugh.

What we really need is Marilyn Manson and Courtney Love doing that “We’re A Couple of Misfits” song from the “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” special.

Paul Anka’s cover of “Smells Like Teen Spirit”. Bad acid trip? You wish:

Paul’s worst at what he does best on YouTube.

The “Baroque Beatles” covers. Imagine “I Want To Hold Your Hand” performed by an opera singer who is really proud of the fact she’s a glass-shattering soprano.

There is an album of Carpenter’s covers that has some amazingly bad stuff on it. (If I were a Carpenter) Not only is the music mostly awful, but the artwork is downright disturbing.

Look for it. But I warned you!
