The latest commercial for the VW Cabrio has four Gen Xers driving down a moonlit California highway, with a song playing in the background. At first, I had that guilty feeling of actually ENJOYING a song in a commercial.
Well, imagine my delight when I heard the song being played on the radio, on WXPN Philadelphia no less. It’s a real song! Sadly, 'XPN is terrible about announcing the title and artist, so I’m left with a mystery.
Does anyone know the title and artist of the song being played in the commercial? The lyrics are hard to understand; something about a “finger moon.” Thanks in advance for your help.
Crimony. VW should come out with a soundtrack CD with that song, the stupid “everything coming together” song and the “Da-da-da” song that sucks in that Eurotrash sort of way.
hey, don’t feel too bad - I personally can’t get enuf of the Gap commercials at christmas time, where they have the christmas song remixes and the gap dancers dancing all over the place…damn I luv those.
Okay, here’s another one. Remember back when this whole campaign started? There was a commercial that showed the beetle blurring in and out of focus while an Oasis-like song was played. I believe that the lyrics started ‘Don’t live in the same world’. I also know Dennis Miller parodied this commercial for his ‘Viewers Wanted’ series. Any guesses on the song and artist?
God freakin’ dammit, now I’ve got that “Da Da Da” song stuck in my head!
Uh huh uh huh uh huhhhhh…
An infinite number of rednecks in an infinite number of pickup trucks shooting an infinite number of shotguns at an infinite number of road signs will eventually produce all the world’s great works of literature in Braille.
Thanks for the answers. As I said, it’s always a guilty pleasure when you enjoy the music on commercials. Makes me feel like I’m abetting uncontrolled consumerism.
Has Nick Drake done anything else? I’ve never heard of him before.
Nick Drake was one of the early hyper-sensitive singer-songwriters who died tragically young. Acoustic guitar magazine did a cover story on him a few months ago, very interesting. He did several albums, and is known as a musician’s musician, not widely known to the general public. He had some major personality/mental problems and they caught up with him. Pink Moon is considered one of his best albums.
hey, i know this one! that da da da song was by trio. it was released in the eighties I believe, but it was re-released just because it was featured in that commercial. you can go buy it right now! yay!
Volkswagen’s web site has a partial list of the songs they’ve used. Unfortunately, it’s only the recent ads (anyone else here remember the Lush ad? Anyone else here ever heard of Lush?)
BTW, I strongly recommend Nick Drake’s Time of No Reply album - better than Pink Moon IMHO.
Errrrrm, scratch that. Five Leaves Left is the Nick Drake album you should buy first. (Sorry, got confused 'cause the first song has the word “Time” in it too :))
