The winner, beyond all doubt: the Twentieth Century Fox fanfare.
In the genre of classical music used for creepy scenes, Berlioz’s witches’ sabbath theme from Symphonie Fantastique has gotten quite a bit of use (The Shining and Sleeping With The Enemy, to name a couple of movies that come to mind).
I love that song!
But don’t remember ever hearing it in a movie.
What are a few it’s been in?
Star Trek: First Contact {?} the one with the Borg in it, anyway. It’s playing as James Cromwell blasts off to test the first ever warp-drive.
And let’s not forget Vivaldi’s “Spring” concerto from The Four Seasons. If you want to establish that your characters are rich and erudite and snobbish, nothing does it quicker than a few bars of “Spring.”
“Unchained Melody” by the Righteous Brothers and “Lady in Red” (artist?) seem to be popular trailer fodder. Drowning Pool’s “Bodies” is one that will likely turn up a lot in trailers in the coming years.
