Songs about card games

Full Deck of Cards

Solitaire

From Page 411 of this site:

Counting flowers on the wall
That don’t bother me at all
Playing solitaire till dawn with a deck of 51
Smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo
Now don’t tell me I’ve nothing to do
Statler Brothers

During the North African Campaign, a bunch of soldier boys had been on a long hike. They arrived in a little town called Casino. The next morning being Sunday, several of the boys went to church. A sergeant commanded the boys in church.

“The Turn of a Friendly Card” by the Alan Parsons Project

maybe “Queen of Hearts” by Juice Newton

That’s the one I came in to mention, which is also the title of the album.

“Della and the Dealer”, by Hoyt Axton (most people remember it from Hoyt’s guest stint on WKRP in Cincinnati)
Also, The Turn of a Friendly Card is actually an concept album all about gambling.

“Monopoly, twenty-one, checkers and chess. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.”

Cool - keep them coming.

Annie-Xmas, the first part of that list is great, but the rest of it? What does Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds or King of Pain have to do with card gambling besides the words in the titles?

Maybe.

Lady Grinning Soul by David Bowie mentions canasta, but I’m not sure why. The lyrics to the song are pretty random.

The Jack, by AC/DC

*She was holdin’ a pair
But I had to try
Her Deuce was wild
But my Ace was high
But how was I to know
That she’d been dealt with before
Said she’d never had a Full House
But I should have known
From the tattoo on her left leg
And the garter on her right
She’d have the card to bring me down
If she played it right

She’s got the Jack*

Oh, and the live version is filthy…

Other than mention of specific cards without a game context, nearly all the songs so far seem to be about poker, with a couple of one-line or title references to Blackjack (“twenty-one”).

What, nobody ever sings about playing Canasta, Gin Rummy, Cribbage or Bridge?

This isn’t a pop song, but my mother taught me this little ditty: “The worms crawl in / the worms crawl out / the worms play pinochle / on your snout.”

Well, there’s Gin & Juice

Well, at least I double-checked before posting “I can’t believe nobody’s mentioned The Gambler by Kenny Rogers.” :smack:

He’s In the Jailhouse Now:

*Bob liked to play his poker
Pinochle whist and euchre *

From a Jack to a King - Ned Miller

(A country classic.)

War: What is it good for?

Bob Seger’s Still the Same.

You always said the cards would never do you wrong
The trick you said was never play the game too long

Also, of course, Deal.

Lost Highway - Hank Williams

Just a deck of cards
and a jug of wine
and a woman’s lies
makes a life like mine

Hello, am I invisible?

And here’s Solitaire from the Carpenters.
