Songs about planes and flying

When the pilot informed us of what he was planning
And I heard the dirty words “emergency landing”…

“Weird Al” Yankovic - Airline Amy

A trip to the moon on gossamer wings is flying, and an excuse to post one of my favorite songs.

Vernon’ll meet me when the BOAC lands
Keys to the M.G. will be in his hands

This is a bit in jest, because I know that many people ridicule this song for having, well, a dearth of lyrics. But actually I kinda like it, I’ve always had a soft spot for Disco, and Munich Disco was great.

BOAC = British Overseas Airways Corporation

Down the rabbit hole -Kray twins - Wikipedia

Murders (with other crimes) who gained some celebrity status. And insane. Back to flying.

He nailed my head to the floor, and he once nailed my wife’s head to a coffee table.

Iron Maiden’s ‘Aces High’ "Jump in the cockpit and start up the engines
Remove all the wheelblocks, there’s no time to waste"

Iron Maiden’s’ “Tailgunner” Climb into the sky, never wonder why, Tail gunner

Monty Python “I’m so Worried”, wherein the singer is worried about the baggage retrieval system at Heathrow

Motorhead’s “Going to Brazil” Flying down to Rio, going to Brazil

Staring At The Rude Boys by UK punk band The Ruts contains a single reference to planes with the line “The punks in the corner are speeding like a jet” but - if you like that sort of early punk / power pop music - it’s a really great song.

“Silver Bird” - Mark Lindsay

And much more recently they did “Secret of Flight” https://youtu.be/BGIIFlr74WI?si=vII0CS6647Wf6n9W

Whoops! Ignore me.

Skywriter

A beautiful song by Jimmy Webb performed by Art Garfunkel

That reminds me of “A Heart In New York” by Art Garfunkel, one of his solo songs he played at the Central Park Concert (with Paul Simon of course). It’s a beautiful song that has the opening lines:

New York, to that tall skyline I come, flyin’ in from London to your door
New York, lookin’ down on Central Park
Where they say you should not wander after dark

So sort of the opposite of the Byrds’ “Eight Miles High”, which describes flying into London from the US.

Art didn’t write it himself though, but I don’t know the songwriters.

Here’s a forgotten song that fits the bill (and will put a smile on a few faces).

Mark Lindsay singing Silver Bird

Hey, we picked the same YouTube link!

Look up!

It’s a bird. It’s a plane.

I’m back! Had a smooth plane trip both ways. Nice to see the thread is still going strong after a week. Here’s another:

Montego Bay - Bobby Bloom

Vernon’ll meet me when the BOAC lands
Keys to the M.G. will be in his hands
Adjust to the drivin’, and I’m on my way
It’s all on the right side in Montego Bay
