The filmmaker chose The Graduate as a vehicle for Simon & Garfunkel tunes; however as I recall, the snippets, or chorus of Mrs. Robinson heard in the film were written specifically for the film. It was not even a complete song until afterwards, because it became wildly popular from the movie. Sort of like, if this can be compared, the “Friends” theme song, which was later made into a full length tune.
