When I was 17, I was so in love with a woman, we worked at the same place. I was shy but eventually got the courage to talk to her. And eventually we would walk out to the parking lot after our shift and talk and soon would sit in my car to talk some more and that led to a date. My first date and my first kiss. And then she got fired and would not take my calls.
And I’ve never known why. It’s like Joesepth Cotton in Citizen Kane, and the woman he saw and not a month went by for the rest of his life he didn’t think of her.
Oh I forgot the kicker. My brother and I went to a concert several months later. 20,00 seat arena. We sat down and I was telling him my story of my broken heart. Looked to my left and she and a guy were sitting right beside us
‘Stars’ by Grace Potter.
While it’s not your traditional “you left me for someone else” heartbreak song, Roy Orbison’s “In the Real World” will always remind me of a particular moment in my own life, and the lyrics will hit me in the feels every single time.
If only we could always live in dreams
If only we could make of life
What, in dreams, it seems
But in the real world
We must say real goodbyes
No matter if the love will live
It will never die
In the real world
There are things that we can’t change
And endings come to us
In ways that we can’t rearrange
I love you, and you love me
But sometimes we must let it be

“I know someday you’ll have a beautiful life
I know you’ll be a sun
in somebody else’s sky
but why
why
whyyyy
can’t it be…
can’t it be mine?”
The last time my heart was broken, I took some solace in Bob Dylan’s Most Of The Time.
All of them?
My last broken heart was, I have decided, my last broken heart.

About regretting that you let someone go. Beautiful melody and chord sequence.
Love, unrequired, robs me of my rest…
Love, hopeless love, my ardent soul encumbers,
Love, nightmare like, lies heavy of me chest,
And weaves itself into my midnight slumbers.
It’s a sort of joke song, but I sometimes thought of it after a night of nightmares and sleeplessness.
George Dukas’ Lipstick Promises
This song was still in heavy rotation when my first major relationship went south.
…You said my love
Would always be enough
Your scarlet kisses on my skin
Fooled me til the end
…Was I easy to deceive?
You were so easy to believe…your lipstick promises
…All your lies
Somehow left me blind
What you said would last so long
Was only painted on…
I bookended Lipstick Promises and The Cyrkle’s Red Rubber Ball (“If I never hear your name again, it’s all the same to me…” /// “I’ve got my life to live and I don’t need you at all…”) until I got through it. But man, it was TOUGH.
