Songs that eulogize other artists?

John Gorka sang about the great Stan Rogers That’s How Legends Are Made from Land of the Bottom Line.

Keep ‘em comin’, guys!

Speaking of Marvin Gaye, wasn’t he the inspiration behind Diana Ross’ I’m Missing You?

Neil Young’s “Hey Hey My My” mentions Johnny Rotten

George Harrison’s “All Those Years Ago” is about John Lennon

Yes, he was.

:smack: I thought it was written after Danny’s death.

The band For Squirrels wrote “Mighty K.C.” about – you guessed it – Kurt Cobain.

Sadly, the band barely made it out of the starting gate before a van accident killed the lead singer and the bass player.

I had a friend who was convinced that “Eulogy” was about Sam Kinison. I always thought that it was more of a general lashing out at organized religion than a personal eulogy.

My favorite’s Alannah Myles’s tribute to Elvis, Black Velvet.

A sample of the lyrics:

Up in Memphis the music’s like a heatwave
White lightening, bound to drive you wild
Mama’s baby’s in the heart of every school girl
“Love me tender” leaves ‘em cryin’ in the aisle

The way he moved, it was a sin, so sweet and true
Always wanting more, he’d leave you longing for
Black velvet and that little boy’s smile
Black velvet with that slow southern style
A new religion that’ll bring ya to your knees
Black velvet, if you please

Lou Reed’s Magic and Loss was about his old songwriting partner’s death. The amn’s name escapes me, and Googling it only brings up 1000 sites trying to sell me the album.

Steve Earle’s Ft. Worth Blues is about his friend and mentor Townes Van Zandt.

Sort of a eulogy: Warren Zevon’s Play it All Night Long about Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Accidental Suicide by John Mayall.
