Travelin’ Soldier by the Dixie Chicks is one of the many…
One Friday night at a football game
The Lord’s Prayer said and the Anthem sang
A man said folks would you bow your heads
For a list of local Vietnam dead
[ DELETED VERSES ]
I have a pretty standard father-son relationship with my dad. We weren’t that close but I didn’t long to be closer, or anything like that. But for some reason, Cat’s Cradle really gets to me, and I can’t figure out why.
Cat’s in the Cradle and the silver spoon
Little Boy Blue and the man on the moon
When you comin’ home dad I don’t know when
But we’ll be together then, and we’ll have a good time then…
I have found these to make me misty-eyed -

El Shaddai By Amy Grant
Through the years youve made it clear,
That the time of christ was near,
Though the people couldnt see
What messiah ought to be.
Though your word contained the plan,
They just could not understand
Your most awesome work was done
Through the frailty of your son.

More secular - And because they remind me of my little girl -
*You’ll be in my Heart - Phil Collins
For one so small, you seem so strong
My arms will hold you keep you safe and warm
This bond between us can’t be broken
I will be here don’t you cry

In My Daughter’s Eyes - Martina McBride
In my daughter’s eyes I am a hero
I am strong and wise and I know no fear
But the truth is plain to see
She was sent to rescue me
I see who I wanna be
In my daughter’s eyes

Old Shep
I know guests can’t search, so I’ll link you to a similar thread we had recently.
One song that always gets me misty-eyed is Never Without You by Ringo Starr from his album “Ringo Rama.” It’s a tribute to George Harrison and their days together as Beatles and features George’s good friend Eric Clapton on guitar.
Another one that brings tears to my eyes is The Living Years by Mike + The Mechanics since I lost my own father a few years ago and still miss him.
I’ll go read the Crying Songs thread.
In the meantime, I submit Empty Garden by Elton John.
Alan Parson’s Project, which believe it or not, has continued to produce decent music, had a song on their Time Machine album of 2002 that knocks me every time.
The Very Last Time
Mare Brennan of Clannad sings vocals.
I need to remember the day
When we said goodbye for the very last time
There was still so much to say
But time came between us and quietly stole you away.
For me, it’s Elton John’s Candle in the Wind
Goodbye Norma Jean…
sniff
Tom Waits singing Shiver Me Timbers
Steve Goodman doing The Dutchman (some versions, not all)
I listened to it just this morning - “Where’ve You Been” by Kathy Mattea. Misty-eyed, hell, try all out sobbing.
“Worlds Apart” by Vince Gill gets me sometimes, too.*
ETA: Thought of the other ones - “Hallelujah” by kd lang and “Hurt” by Christina Aguilera.
*I am NOT a country music fan - I just won’t not listen to good stuff just because it’s of a certain genre.
In My Life by the Beatles. I couldn’t listen to it for months without getting choked up.
I’ve always found Sgt. MacKenzie very moving.
Any bagpipe melody in the context of battle. Very emotional.
But seriously, that Dido song, “Thank You” makes me really weepy, to the point of spontaneous tears in the car once…
Joe
What song is most likely to make you cry? didn’t warrant a mention? Perhaps cry was a bit too harsh, teary-eyed is better.
