Songs that mention other bands

  1. Three Dog Night’s “Never Been to Spain” mentions the Fab 4:

Well, I never been to England
But I kinda like the Beatles
2) George Jones’ “Who’s Gonna Fill Their Shoes” names a host of old time country music stars (including Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Lefty Frizzell).
3) Mary Chapin Carpenter’s “I Feel Lucky” mentions Lyle Lovett & Dwight Yoakam.

Dwight Yoakam’s in the corner, trying to catch my eye
Lyle Lovett’s right beside me with his hand upon my thigh

Oh I just thought of another one-Godstar by Psychic Tv. Which is all about Brian Jones (out of the Rolling Stones)

“This is a story about Brian Jones, he was a member of the Rolling Stones” and it goes on about how the other Rolling Stones were all jealous of him etc etc. (nothing about how he beat his girlfriends up and left them after impregnating them with his children…hmmmmmmmm) It is a very catchy tune however, was a big indie hit in the late 80s (I think).

Much in the same vein is ‘I.C Water’ by the same band. This time it is about Ian Curtis of Joy Division. Nowhere near as catchy and therefore much more obscure.

Lou Reed’s “Beginning of a Great Adventure” : he mentions Bono.
Manic Street Preachers’ “Dead Passive”: has a line that goes “…the ballad of Adam and Naomi…”
Refers to Adam Clayton, bassist for U2 and Naomi Campbell, the supermodel he was once engaged to.

Atom & His Package:

Hats off to Halford - “make those nazi fuckin’ pricks in slayer / a little uncomfortable”

Shopping Spree - “the dalai llamas were the band scheduled to rock” (point of interest: atom stole the song from them, but rewrote the lyrics accusing them of stealing the song from HIM).

Mountain Goats:
Bluebird (I think, not really sure of the title…) - “LeAnn Rimes (sp) on the car stereo, sang that song you know I hate”

If we are counting songs about other bands even if they are not mentioned explicitly, “Journey to the End of the East Bay” by Rancid is obviously about Operation Ivy.

“Milo Went to College” was also the name of one of the Descendents albums but you probably knew that.

“Milo Goes to College,” that is. :smack:

And going for my third post in a row, I remember I forgot one right after I posted…

AFI’s “I Wanna Get a Mohawk (but my mom won’t let me)”

I wear my Cramps t-shirt almost every single day

and

I listen to the Misfits almost every single day

;j

Brian Eno, “The True Wheel”
“We saw the lovers, the Modern Lovers
And they looked very good, they looked as if they could”

This song was from 1974, before anyone had heard of Jonathan Richman’s Modern Lovers, but Eno was always ahead of everyone else and promoted Richman’s band with this song.

Brian Eno, “Kings Lead Hat”
The title of this 1977 song is an anagram for a band. Can you guess which one? Their first album came out that same year, '77. (hint) They went on to big success and fame. Eno, again, was promoting them to the public. And he was right. He collaborated on three albums with them, helping them to achieve artistic brilliance.

beastie boys…"…if I played guitar, I’d be Jimmy Page, the girlies I like are underage…" not exactly a band but a band member

Its all about Aerosmith. “Joey had the licks and stevie had the lips/together they will blow you away/the train kept a rollin right out of control/now they are back in the saddle today”

NOFX - Whoa on the Whoas
“Between the AFI and the Offspring I dont think we need anybody else to sing anymore ‘whoas’/we hate ‘whoas’/we’re against ‘whoas’/we hate ‘whoas’”

NOFX - Fun Things to F@ck
“f@ck fans of Blink 182/thats illegal if you are born in '83”

NOFX - San Fransisco Fat
“Hollywood is a breeding ground for assholes/egos get as big as Billy Corgon’s(THATS BIG)”

Nerf Herder has songs titled “Courtney”(Love) and “Van Halen”, bashing both pretty hard.

Where it comes to Irish music, I’ve just remembered Lisdoonvarna by Christy Moore. I think that beats every other song on this list for the number of bands/artistes mentioned.

“Miko Russell, Doctor Bill,
Willy Clancy and Noel Hill”

“There’s Van the Man, and Emmylou
Moving Hearts & Planxty too”

He also mentions

Liam Óg O’Floinn, Joe Dolan, U2, The Chieftans, Clannad, Jackson Browne, Mary O’Hara, Brush Shields, and himself.

I make that 17.

The ramones “do you remeber rock and roll radio” is all about remebering a lot of people …

What do you call something with six legs and four balls?

Peter, Paul, and Mary

George Harrison, “Pure Smokey” — a song all about Smokey Robinson.

So nobody can guess the band name anagram in “Kings Lead Hat”? I thought it was well known by now.

Okay, here’s one no one’s mentioned yet: Hair by the Cowsills: “It’s not for lack of bread, like the Grateful Dead”
