Mojo Nixon in Punk Rock Girl by The Dead Milkmen
And, (same song, next line),
“Now I know what Brian Wilson meant … since God invented girls.”
– “Since God Invented Girls”, Elton John
“Candle In the Wind” is about Marilyn Monroe and names her (as both Norma Jean and Marilyn Monroe).
There’re a couple of songs about or mentioning Yoko Ono, particularly by Elton John, which I just can’t think of at the moment.
And Minnie Pearl.
John Cougar Mellencamp’s “R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A” features another litany of folks.
Blondie’s “Rapture”: Fab 5 Freddy
Jesus Christ, Pontius Pilate, Nicholas II (“the czar”), Anastasia Romanov, John and Bobby Kennedy - “Sympathy for the Devil” by The Rolling Stones
Martin van Buren, James Buchanan, Lewis Cass, Napoleon - “James K. Polk” by They Might Be Giants
In the “people you wouldn’t expect to get mentioned” category:
Crime crime
Rockin’ like Janet Reno
Time time
Eighteen and life in Chino
“Original Prankster”, The Offspring
With the funky hot riffs
Thick like Al Roker
Pumpin out hits
Gettin chips like Oprah
“Forever”, Kid Rock
I could be wrong, but didn’t Mojo Nixon do, “Debbie Gibson is pregnant with my two-headed love child?”
A few others:
Cracker - Burt Bacarach [sp?] is mentioned in “Shine”
Frank Sinatra is mentioned in “Teen Angst”
I’m ashamed to admit I know this one, but what about Blessed Union of Soul’s “Hey Leonardo?” It’s got Leo, Cindy Crawford, Tyson Beckford, Robert Redford, Pavarotti [sp?]
The Smiths - Prince Charles gets a line in “The Queen is Dead”- **
“Charles don’t you ever crave
To appear on the front of the Daily Mail
Dressed in your mother’s bridal veil?”
Joan Osbourne- “Spiderwebs” is about Ray Charles getting his sight
Bree Sharp- " David Duchovny, Why won’t you love me" self explaintory (there’s a country song too, but I forget who by)
Yellow Broth Chicken Sloth- " Gillian Anderson" self explanatory
Mark Crause- " What about Gillian Anderson?" self explanatory
Local H- " Eddie Vetter" self explanatory
Alien Crime Syndicate- " Ozzy" about Ozzy Osborne and other 80’s metal bands
Nerf Herder- " Van Hallen" about how much they now hate the band
Veruca Salt- " Vocano Girls" does a Glass Onion and refers back to their song “Seether” by claiming that Seether is Louise [Post, one of the singers]
Toad the Wet Sprocket- “Nancy” has this line " I can’t believe you bend your words like Uri Geller’s spoons"
The Bloodhound Gang- " Mope" refers to Notorious B.I.G, Tupac Shakur, Falco, Deep throat, Journey, the Pope, Tori Spelling, Luciano Pavoratti, Bo Jackson, and Frankie Goes To Hollywood
" " - “Fire Water Burn” mentions Barry White, Frank Black, J.F.K., Marvin Gaye, Martha Raye, Lawrence Welk, Kurt Cobain, Mark Twain and Jimi Hendrix and Emmanuel Lewis
Paula Cole- “Where have all the cowboys gone” John Wayne
Bush- " Everything’s Zen" Elvis
Lucky Boy’s Confusion- " Fred Astaire" self explanatory
John Oszajca- " Where is Bob Dylan when you need him?" self explanatory
<minor hijack> can we do a thread about imaginary people too? Bloodhound Gang probably has over a dozen references between those two songs alone.
</minor hijack>
Beastie Boys:
Finger Lickin’ Good mentions The Frugal Gourmet
So Whatcha’ Want mentions Dr. Spock and Eddie Harris (and I always thought they mentioned Vincent Gardenia, but I guess I was wrong!)
And of course, during the fade out Simon says, “I’ve lost my harmonica, Albert”, which is a reference to Albert Grossman, Dylan’s manager.
Some others come to mind that may not have been mentioned:
Dr. Bernice by Cracker - "Though the wind my whisper an epic sometimes, the cast must include Karen Black. "
Good Morning, Mr. Waldheim by Lou Reed mentions Kurt Waldheim, Jesse Jackson, Louis Farrakhan and the Pope.
The Right Profile by the Clash is all about Montgomery Clift.
Has anyone mentioned “Rosanna” by Toto? IIRC, it’s written for Rosanna Arquette.
I’m not sure if this counts, but I think Green Day were originally called Sweet Children. Then for some reason, they changed their name, renaming themselves after one of their songs. (probably about weed)
However, in regards to the OP:
These are all songs by the Clash, seeing as I’ve got my Clash Lyrics book handy:
[ul]
[li]“1977” mentions Elvis, the Beatles, and the Rolling Stones (“no Elvis, Beatles, or the Rolling Stones”)[/li][li]“City of the Dead” references Johnny Thunders of the New York Dolls (“that’s what New York Johnny said”)[/li][li]“The Magnificent Seven” lists a bunch of people: Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, Martin Luther King, Mahatma Gandhi, Socrates, Richard Nixon, and Plato[/li][li]“Washington Bullets” mentions Allende, Castro, and the Dalai Lama[/li][li]“Ghetto Defendant” meations Jean Arthur Rimbaud[/li][li]“White Man in Hammersmith Palais” mentions Adolf Hitler[/li][/ul]
“I saw the Stooges and the MC5” by Radio Birdman from Do The Pop.
“Garland Jeffries on the car radio …” also by R.B. from I-94.
“I saw the Stooges, covered in bruises” by the Dictators from Who Will Save Rock and Roll.
“The King is Gone but is not forgotten, Is this the story of Johnny Rotten” by Neil Young from “Hey Hey My My”.
“Smelling like an old adobe woman, a William Burroughs playing for lost time” by John Cale from Dying On The Vine. (ps, the John Cale song is called Mr Wilson, not Brian Wilson).
“How in the world were they making that sound, The Velvet Underground” by Jonathan Richman.
“I asked Hank Williams, how lonely does it get …” by Leonard Cohen from Tower of Song (changed to “I asked Leonard Cohen …” by Nick Cave in his cover of it.)
“Just because I watch Dinah Shore, doesn’t mean I need a facelift” by the Victims (Australia) from Television Addict.
The song Dolly Parton’s Guitar (as in “I’m as happy as …”) by Lee Hazlewood.
The song I know where Syd Barrett lives by The Television Personalities.
[returning to hijack]Another artist who have named songs after themselves - Iron Maiden[/hijack]
There’s also a Counting Crows song, “Monkey”, that says “I’ve got Ben Folds on the radio”
From **Warren Zevon[/b:
“Boom Boom Mancini”,
In “Turmoil”, he names Gorbachev and Schevarnadze.
“Jesus Mentioned” - ‘Can’t you just imagine, digging up The King, begging him to sing.’
Waylon Jennings: “Are you sure Hank done it this way?”
**Dion:(??): ** “Abraham, Martin, and John”
the afghan whigs mention nas in the song “omerta”
“'I don’t sleep ‘cuz sleep is the cousin of death’,
Least that’s what Nas says”
of course, greg dulli of the whigs is referring to nasir (nasty nas/nas escobar/nastradamus) jones, the emcee who brought us the classic album “illmatic.”
that’s one of the few times a rock singer has mentioned (and quoted) a hiphop artist, as far as i know. but this IS the same group who covered tlc’s “creep” (and did a damn fine version of it, much better than the original).
but in rap, emcees name-drop constantly. a hiphop album can have hundreds of references, especially to funk and motown artists, sometimes even pointing out where the beat came from. or they’ll call out other rappers, who oftentimes get thoroughly dissed.
Billy Bragg wrote “The Passion” which has the chorus:
And sometimes it takes a grown man a long time to learn
Just what it would take a child a night to learn
Later, Michael Franti of Spearhead wrote “Water Pistol Man.” The first stanza contains the lines:
but my friend Billy told me that sometimes it takes a grown man
a long time to learn just what it takes a child a night to learn
and my son proved his words
Lou Reed talks about people in practically every song. Someone already mentioned “Good Morning, Mr. Waldheim,” but “Walk on the Wild Side” name-drops a bunch of the old Factory folks. Candy Darling, Holly Woodlawn, “Little Joe” Dallesandro, and Jackie Curtis. Not to mention Sugar Plum Fairy. Also, nearly every song on Songs for Drella refers to Andy Warhol, and the entire album was about him… Bob Dole and Rush “Rambo” get lanced in “Sex with your Parents (Motherfucker) Part 2” on Set the Twilight Reeling, and I know I’m forgetting people that Reed has name-checked…
The Magnetic Fields mention Billy Holiday in “My Only Friend.”
Okay, I just completely lost my train of thought…
Someone beat me to Tori Amos’ Neil Gaiman reference in Tear In My Hand, but there’s another one in Horses:
This is a reference to Gaiman’s story Stardust in which the spirit who inhabits a particular tree is supposed to, in some fashion, be Tori.
U2 has a reference to Bruce Cockburn in God Part II:
R.E.M. has quite a few. 51, at last count, and that’s not even counting their two most recent albums.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers mention Mazzy Star in Aeroplane and The Butthole Surfers in Deep Kick.
Oh, I forgot another Tori reference. Glory of the 80’s mentions Raquel Welsh, Joan of Arc, and “that blonde chick that sings Bette Davis Eyes.” I can’t remember who the actual “blonde chick” is at the moment. I suppose that means she mentions Bette Davis too, come to think of it.
A little reformatting, add a few and we’re up over 900 (Split into 3 posts) Here are the 1st 323.
