Songs that nearly ruin a movie – the two prime contenders being “Raindrops” from Butch Cassidy and “Que sera sera” from “The Man Who Knew Too Much”. Can you think of other nominees? Or in general, other music that was just wrong for the movie you were watching?
I think Casino was ruined by the vast number of songs used throughout- its like every minute or so you hear another song, most of which didn’t compliment the scene. Goodfellas did such a sublime job of using music, its weird that Casino did such a lousy job.
“Build Me Up Buttercup” in There’s Something About Mary.
What an insipid song.
“Can You Read My Mind” from the first Reeve Superman movie.
Yuck. Also, double yuck.
Christmas Tree Songs in Spy Films
“The Whole World Needs a Christmas Tree” sung by Perry Como(!) in The Odessa File
“That’s What Christmas Trees Are For” in the James Bond film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service
What were they thinking.
(On the other hand, “The Look of Love” is one of the few good things about the 1967 Casino Royale. At least there aren’t any Christmas trees i it.)
*Fortune and Men’s Eyes * is almost ruined by its offensively moronic theme song of the same title. Otherwise, it’s a fairly good melodrama about homosexuality and the struggle for domination in prison.
Rififi has the Semi-Obligatory Musical Number in a Nightclub that feels quite out of place. Treat that scene as an intermission.
You thought that was a bad choice? I thought it was perfect. It was an innocent song with a very twisted backdrop. And apparently, the rest of the world liked it, too.
The entire Napoleonic era BBC series of Sharpe was filmed to screaching rock guitar music.
along the same lines, lots of people disliked the rock score for Ladyhawke, or the modern music in Moulin Rouge and A Knight’s Tale.
I liked the first, hated the second, and haven’t seen the third.
Really?
I’ve watched it on BBC America and I don’t really recall that. Maybe they changed it?
Treat all nightclub musical interludes in any noir as an intermission.
But yeah, that one definitely wasn’t your standard smoky voiced chanteuse.
This is what I came into the thread to post. Just, ugh. I watched this film for the first time just a few months ago, and during the “Raindrops” segment I was dumbstruck by sheer WTFitude.
Another excellent choice.
Not a particular song per se but the entire musical selection for the Spike Lee movie He Got Game.
For the three other people who saw it, you know what I’m talking about. Spike went with a classical music score to serve as the backdrop for critical scenes. Though the idea may have seemed like a good one, it totally doesn’t work and serves as a nothing more than a major distracter.
Oh and the rest of the movie is pretty much crap too.
I’ve watched the Sharpe series twice on DVD, and I don’t remember rock music in it either.
As far as I remember Sharpe was more haunting electric folk than “screaching rock guitar music”. I’ll try and check it out this evening - it’s bound to be repeated somewhere on cable
I don’t really think you can top that one.
The Perfect Storm wasn’t a very good movie, but it was made unwatchable by an absolutely terrible score that pummeled you with the same sappy riff, over and over and over from the opening credits to blessed closing ones.
I haven’t seen the movie in years, but I can still hear that stupid score.
I remember the director of A Knight’s Tale saying that the orchestral compositions used in similar movies was 400 years too late for the period, so why quibble over a couple of hundred more.
I was going to come into here and complain about Knights Tale and Ladyhawke…but I’ll be damned if that isn’t irrefutable logic.
