I was going to say “Bright Eyes”, then i paused to wonder how Art Garfunkel will defend himself against PJ Harvey. It doesn’t matter. I love them both but frankly Mr Garfunkel has a voice that echoes down centuries from hot summer hazes a thousand years ago when ghosts wandered at crossroads and sang about Scarborough fair.
Bright Eyes just makes me cry, every single time. And I hate bunnies.

Not so much a fan…but listening to them always brings me back to my artschool days. There were three things I played constantly in my studio during my senior year - Tori Amos’ Little Earthquakes, The Pixies ‘Dolittle’ and Einsturzende Neubauten’s ‘Strategies Against Architecture II’. Sigh.
…I thought I was the only person alive who liked this version (although, IMO, it hasn’t stood the test of time as well as I would’ve liked)
Good pull.
Wanted to add:
“Diamonds and Rust” - Joan Baez
“She’s Leaving Home” - the Beatles
“Center of Your Will” - Twila Paris coughcough* “Butterfly Kisses” - Bob Carlisle cough
anything - Gypsy Soul (but in particular “Talk to Me”)
That’s what I was going for when I started this thread. I didn’t want people to simply list their favorite songs. Instead, I want people to list songs that affect them like I initially described: “…These are songs that you want to listen to 20, 30, or even 50 times in a row. Like a drug, they take you on a trip and allow you to transcend your life. Time has no meaning and all of your priorities are redefined when hearing songs of this type.” In summary, the song should overpower you, so that nothing else matters while you’re listening to the song.
I’m going to add ‘Last Goodbye’ by Jeff Buckley to my list now. If for nothing else but the fact that I AM playing it ad infinitum on my CD player at this moment.
Home Sweet Home - Flatt and Scruggs
Nighttime - Big Star (well, Alex Chilton, essentially)
Beethoven’s 7th Symphony
Aria to the Goldberg Variations
When the Golden Leaves Begin to Fall - Bill Monroe
One Day at a Time - The Flatlanders
If You See Her, Say Hello - Bob Dylan
The Warmest Room - Billy Bragg
Lonesome Suzie - The Band
Shostakovich’s Seventh Symphony (especially the 2nd Mvt.)
Yes, I would urge all people who think of Rammstein as only Du Hast, to get their hands on Sonne. It’s…amazing. Perhaps the best song they’ve ever written. There I said it.
I would also like to add these songs to my list:
The Boxer by Simon and Garfunkel
and
Waiting for The Night by Depeche Mode
