Songs that should be covered

Not that originals were bad, BTW. I heard “Brown Eyed Girl” on the radio the other night, and I was reminded thtat during the VH1 top 100 countdown, Jon Bon Jovi claimed (rightly IMO), that if that song were recorded today, it’d be a hit. So I asked myself,“SELF!, Why hasn’t anyone covered that song?”

I think LOADS of Bob Dylan songs from the last 20 years or so should be covered, so we can finally hear them done well.

I’m not a standard Dylan basher, folks. In his prime, even though he was never a great singer in any conventional sense, he was almost always the best interpreter of his own material. But for nearly 20 years now, his vocals have been not just bad in conventional terms, but wretched in his OWN terms.

He can’t sing at all in concert. His live performances have been unforgivably atrocious for nearly two decades. And even in the studio, his voice is so far gone that even the greatest producers can’t cover for him any more.

However, Bob still writes some very good songs. So, I’d LOVE for him to find a latter day equivalent of the Byrds- a band that can make his songs sound good.

Could be legal bounderies.

Deep Purple’s “No One Came”, tucked away in the middle of Fireball. Specifically, I’d like to see (hear?) David Lee Roth cover it. Diamond Dave’s probably the only vocalist who could do that song justice.

Also, Black Sabbath’s “Hole in the Sky” and “All Moving Parts Stand Still”. Especially “All Moving Parts…”- desparately needs to be rescued from Technical Ecstasy, which I consider to be one of the worst albums ever made.

How about “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina”, by someone, like me who can actually sing. After the good version is recorded, the cover should be sent to Madonna, so she knows how it should have been sung.

I think that Mr. Bungle should cover the theme song from Donkey Kong Country. It has the perfect bass line for their style, and they’ve already covered the Zelda theme.

Don’t Cry For Me Argentina was covered by Me First And The Gimme Gimmes, a poppy punk fun band. It’s a hilarious cover!

I’ve always wanted to hear Mellisa Ethridge do ‘Tainted Love’; her voice would be perfect, and the whole gay thing would add a fun In your face attitude to it.

Does anyone have her email address?

Everclear covered “Brown Eyed Girl” on “Songs From an American Movie Part 1”. It was ok. I don’t think it was a hit.

I really want Ben Folds to cover a Billy Joel song, especially Angry Young Man or Root Beer Rag.

Pantera has done “Hole in the Sky.” They also did “Planet Caravan” from Paranoid. While I shun most covers, I have to admit both of these were pretty well done.

I’d love to hear someone like Melissa Etheridge do The Tragically Hip’s “Boots or Hearts”.

‘Shoop’ by Salt ‘n’ Pepa
‘Suzy-q’ by C.C.revival
‘Get up offa that thang’ by James Brown (into a dance mix)
‘Pusha Man’ by Curtis Mayfield …well …maybe not that one because there could never be another Pusha Man
