Songs That Wouldn't Fly Today

davidm mentioned “Don’t Stand So Close” in post 66.

Sure is.

“Chinese Circus” by Tin Huey.
“Paw-paw Negro Blowtorch” (seriously) by Brian Eno.

I’ve always felt that people misunderstand how pathetic the song Paper Doll is. To get it across it should be sung as Rubber Doll.

Yeah, it goes from quaint to woah-outdated in one line:

And another thing that bothers me is that if she’s staying home, how is she managing to give him money when he’s in need?

"Go Away Little Girl"

Go away little girl
Go away little girl
I’m not supposed to be alone with you

“Shake, Rattle And Roll”

Get out from that kitchen and rattle those pots and pans
Get out from that kitchen and rattle those pots and pans
Well, roll my breakfast 'cause I’m a hungry man

Wasn’t that a father/daughter song?

No. O’Sullivan was babysitting his manager’s daughter.

NetTrekker, we take copyright very seriously, here. Quoting a short excerpt of a song is acceptable under Fair Use, but quoting the entire lyrics is not. As such, I’ve edited your posts.

I’ll throw a couple of Kenny Rogers songs out there. Ruby Don’t Take Your Love to Town (about a crippled Vietnam vet whose contemplating shooting his cheating wife then committing suicide) and Coward of the County. Not sure either would be on the “would not fly” list, but both are somewhat inappropriate in spots…

He doesn’t commit suicide. He says that if he could move he would get his gun and kill her.

Yeah, I said contemplating those two things.

Rod Stewart, Every Picture Tells a Story. “On the Peking ferry, I was feeling merry…I fell in love with a slit-eyed lady…”

White and old.

The reason you don’t hear music with problematic lyrics on the radio anymore is that old white guys only listen to old white guy music.

Signed,
An Old White Guy.

White and old, well maybe, but actually when you look at the hip-hop oeuvre then its clear that pretty much everything that has been quoted so far is mild - and yet this stuff is currently flying.

If you want homophobic, misogynistic, drug and violence laden bullshit, then you don’t have to look too far - I’d go as far as also adding there is a strong element of racism too.

Sure, maybe pop music is a minefield of obscenity and I’m just not paying attention. But I’ll bet you still couldn’t release a song called Thank Heaven for Little Girls by a group called The Dick Hyman Trio.

That ‘flew’ in 2015 as a song written by a 25 year old rap artist who’s girlfriend had just turned 18 when he released the song.

Not really… the original lyrics are about poor black people wearing flashy clothes that don’t fit (probably secondhand), and spending more than they can afford trying to ape the upper classes.

Spangled Gowns upon the bevy of
High browns from down the levy *
All misfits
Puttin’ on the Ritz
[…]
Come with me and we’ll attend their jubilee
And see them spend
Their last two bits
Puttin’ on the Ritz

[* high brown = light-skinned black person, especially women]

Hee. Don’t be a frump with curlers in and your old housecoat on. Dress up as a sex kitten or it’s your fault if he cheats.

Plus, curlers can give you that “headache” you’re always using as an excuse.
