Songs with impressions of other singers/groups

In return, “Piss Up a Rope” is Ween’s tribute to David Allan Coe.

Ween does this often. “It’s Gonna Be a Long Night” is their take on Motorhead (RIP Lemmy).

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers served as Dylan’s backing band for his 1986–1987 tour, so no doubt some of Dylan’s style rubbed off on them. (Though I’m pretty sure that Petty had also been a fan of Dylan’s for some time before that.)

Squeeze’s biggest hit, “Tempted,” was a foray into soul music in the style of the Temptations. The joke is right there in the title. They even brought in non-band member Paul Carrack, a sort of whiteboy soul singer in the Michael McDonald vein, to sing it.

The Divine Comedy’s “perfect lovesong” is a tribute to many songs and styles, but specifically contains the line

while the musical arrangement introduces these elements.

I see a lot of obvious parallels to Babylon Sisters and Sy Borg.

Brian Eno’s “Dead Finks Don’t Talk” includes a line (at 1:15) sung in the style of Eno’s former bandmate Bryan Ferry.

Huh. I’m not seeing much of a resemblance since The Temptations were distinctive for a group sound.

Hmm – I’ve loved that song ever since it came out and I never made that connection, but yeah, I can see it.

Apologizes if this has already been poster: David Bowie doing a bunch of impersonations.
