Some other John Lennon/Beatles songs have been mentioned, but so far no mention of “John Sinclair” from the John Lennon/Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band album “Some Time in New York City.”
This was John and Yoko’s most hardcore “political” album, with all of the songs referring to events/movements of the early 70s. John Sinclair was a leader of the hippies in the Ann Arbor and Detroit, Michigan area. He was arrested for giving two joints to an undercover cop and originally got a 10 year prison sentence. Hence the lyric “they gave him ten for two, what more could the bastards do?” Sinclair was released before serving the 10 years, after John and Yoko came to Ann Arbor and headlined a “Free John Sinclair” rally at Crisler Arena (U of Michigan basketball venue). Sinclair currently lives in New Orleans, and frequently returns to his native Michigan, especially for the annual Ann Arbor “Hash Bash” rally for marijuana legalization.
