Songs with Maternal Advice

‘My mama done tol’ me, when I was in knee-pants/pig-tails…’ Blues in the Night (Done by a bunch of artists, of both sexes, obviously.)

**

Actually, Fancy was only covered by Reba. Bobbi Gentry of Billy Joe fame did the original back in 1969. It was, of all things, Bobbi’s tribute to the Women’s Lib Movement of the time.

Only recently have sex workers been purported to be an empowerment of women as porn goes mainstream. True courtesans aren’t there yet, but give it time. Bobbi Gentry was ahead of her time.

…please tell me you do realize he’s not talking about anybody’s mother…

Nava: please note that Paul’s mom was named Mary, and died of breast cancer when he was 14. I believe they were very close.

My assumption is that Paul was going for the broad Christian meaning of Mother Mary AND referring to his own mother.

The gospel version from the movie by Julie Taymor, Across the Universe, moves me to tears: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ahe5IDVbzg

Richard Thompson - “Mother Knows Best”

Mama Said by Metallica.

It’s actually probably a cover, but I love Met and I like this song, so it’s the only one that exists in my book :stuck_out_tongue:

“Euro Trash Girl,” Cracker -

Called my mom from a payphone
I said “I’m down to my last.”
She said “I sent you to college
Now go call your dad.”

And the waitress that he married
Well she hung up the phone.

Song for Sharon, Joni Mitchell

*Mama and Betsy say, “Find yourself a charity.
Help the needy and the crippled
Or put some time into ecology”
*

“Go and fix your makeup girl
its just a breakup runnin’
hide your crazy and start acting like a lady
cuz I raised you better
gotta keep it together
even when you fall apart
This ain’t your momma’s broken heart”

-Miranda Lambert

“Hush little baby, don’t say a word,
And never mind that noise that you heard,
It’s just the beasts under your bed,
In your closet, in your head”

Enter Sandman, by Metallica

“Mama said a pistol is the Devil’s right hand” - Steve Earle

“Sylvia’s Mother”, Dr Hook and the Medicine Show

He was absolutely talking about someone’s mother.

Thank you for saving me the trouble of looking this up.

My entry is Johnny Winter doing “Mama Talk Your Daughter” live in 1970. Despite the dreadful audio and video quality, I strongly recommend a look at it:

Charlene, “I’ve Never Been to Me”

DAYUM that man could play!

Here’s my offering:

Mama said Don’t go near that river.
Don’t be hanging around old Catfish John.
Come the morning, I’d always be there.
Walking in his footsteps in the sweet delta dawn.

Hey - what am I, chopped liver?! ;);):stuck_out_tongue:

I mentioned the Paul’s Mom connection back in Post #24!!

“It’s Just a Matter of Time” by Debbie Boone

She (Mama) told me
“Patience is all you really need to pray for
'Cause your beauty is rare, a very special kind
Enjoy your life, soon you’ll be a wife with a man to care for
You’ll see that’s the way it’ll be
It’s just a matter of time”

“Won’t you take this advice I hand you like a mother…”

“Hey There,” from “The Pajama Game.”

Except when the guy sings it, and it’s “like a brother.”

Don’t Put It in Your Mouth by Uncle Bonsai
