Actually, Fancy was only covered by Reba. Bobbi Gentry of Billy Joe fame did the original back in 1969. It was, of all things, Bobbi’s tribute to the Women’s Lib Movement of the time.
Only recently have sex workers been purported to be an empowerment of women as porn goes mainstream. True courtesans aren’t there yet, but give it time. Bobbi Gentry was ahead of her time.

My assumption is that Paul was going for the broad Christian meaning of Mother Mary AND referring to his own mother.
